Try Windows’ built-in audio troubleshooting and standard service restart steps before changing drivers. Those steps address general audio failures; they are not a guaranteed forced recovery for a service that will not leave Stopping.
Start with the Windows audio troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends running the audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Follow its prompts and check whether sound returns. Microsoft’s instructions cover general audio problems, rather than a specific repair for a service frozen in the Stopping state. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide also covers Windows 10.

Restart the audio services through Services
Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance names Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). In Services, try restarting the audio services using the steps below. Restarting RPC is not a routine first action: it is a core Windows service, and Windows may prevent it from being stopped or restarted while in use.

- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio. Right-click it and choose Restart, if that option is available.
- Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- If the service restart does not resolve the audio problem, consult Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance before taking further action with RPC.
If Windows Audio remains at Stopping or the restart command is unavailable, do not assume that forcing a process to close is Microsoft’s recommended fix. Microsoft says, “If restarting these services doesn’t resolve your issue, see the next sections for more troubleshooting.” That is general guidance, not a promise that a hung stop state will recover this way. See Microsoft’s full steps and subsequent troubleshooting sections.

Check whether an update or driver change preceded the problem
If the sound failure began after a Windows update, Microsoft identifies incompatible or partially installed audio drivers and audio services that fail to start as possible causes. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of why a particular service is stuck on Stopping.
- Check Windows Update for available updates, then restart the PC if prompted.
- In Device Manager, inspect the audio device for an error or driver update option.
- If the problem started after a driver update and the Roll Back Driver option is available, consider using it. Microsoft includes rollback as an option in its update-related audio troubleshooting steps.
Use the instructions for your Windows version and device. Microsoft’s guide to audio stopping after a Windows update explains the relevant update and driver steps.

Get the right driver for your exact PC or audio device
If the driver needs an update or reinstall and Windows does not resolve the problem, use the support site for your PC maker or sound-card manufacturer. Match the driver to the exact device model and Windows version; a driver intended for a different model or edition may not be appropriate. Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting guidance directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific drivers rather than guaranteeing that one generic driver will work.
What to do if Windows Audio stays on Stopping
The Microsoft support pages cited here do not give a dedicated forced-stop command or recovery procedure for AudioSrv when its service status remains Stopping. Avoid treating process termination, permission changes, or an unverified command as official guidance. If the troubleshooter, ordinary service steps, update checks, and model-matched driver guidance do not help, contact your PC or audio-device manufacturer or use a Windows support procedure verified for your specific version and situation.
