Windows Asking for a Microsoft Recovery Key? Find the BitLocker Key

A Windows recovery-key prompt usually needs the 48-digit BitLocker key. Find it through the matching account or an offline backup—and know the risks before resetting.

If Windows is asking for a Microsoft recovery key, it usually means it needs your BitLocker recovery key to unlock an encrypted drive. On another device, go to aka.ms/myrecoverykey, sign in to the Microsoft account that may hold the key, and match the key ID shown on the locked PC. For a work or school computer, try aka.ms/aadrecoverykey or contact your organization’s IT team. The recovery key is a 48-digit number—not a Windows product activation key.

What is a Microsoft recovery key?

In this context, “Microsoft recovery key” means the BitLocker recovery key: a 48-digit number that can unlock an encrypted Windows drive when Windows cannot unlock it automatically. It is not a Windows product key and cannot activate Windows.

BitLocker displays a recovery-key ID to help identify the right saved key. Use that ID to select the matching 48-digit key; a different key will not unlock the drive. Starting with Windows 11, version 24H2, Microsoft says the recovery screen also shows a hint of the Microsoft account associated with the key.

Why is Windows asking for the key?

BitLocker can ask for recovery information after a hardware, firmware, or software change, or when it detects a possible security risk. A legitimate change can look to BitLocker like an attempt to tamper with the device, so a prompt does not by itself mean the PC has been attacked.

Where to find the matching BitLocker key

Before searching, write down the recovery-key ID shown on the screen. Use another device if the PC is locked, and compare the ID with the keys you find.

Where to check When it may help What to do
Personal Microsoft account The key was backed up to the account used to set up or use the PC. Visit aka.ms/myrecoverykey, sign in, and match the key ID. If another person set up the computer, check whether the key is in their account.
Work or school account / IT team The device is managed by an employer or school. Try aka.ms/aadrecoverykey. If the key is not available to you, contact the organization’s IT support; access may depend on its policies.
USB flash drive A key backup was saved to removable storage. Check the USB for the saved key or text file, using another device if needed. Keep the drive separate from the locked computer.
Printed copy The key was printed during setup or a later backup. Look through safely stored papers and match the key ID. Do not store the printout with the computer.
File or cloud copy The key was saved to a file on an unencrypted location or copied to a secure cloud location. Check the location used when the backup was made. The BitLocker-protected drive cannot be the only place to keep the key needed to unlock it.

Microsoft Support says it “doesn’t have the ability to retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.” If none of these locations has a matching key, Support cannot disclose or regenerate one for you.

What to do if you cannot find the key

Do not guess at keys or assume a utility can regenerate one. If you cannot locate the matching key and cannot undo the change that triggered recovery, Windows recovery or reset may be necessary. Resetting removes files, and most recovery options in the Windows Recovery Environment require the BitLocker key when encryption is enabled.

Back up a recovery key before you need it

Backing up a key is different from recovering a lost one: a backup preserves an existing key; it does not create a replacement that can decrypt the drive. Microsoft lists saving the key to a Microsoft account, USB flash drive, text file, or printout. It also describes saving to an unencrypted location and copying the file to OneDrive Personal Vault.

If you use a USB drive or printout, store it away from the computer. Anyone who has both the computer and its recovery key may be able to bypass BitLocker protection. The key file takes only a few KB, so a large USB drive is unnecessary; a USB is an optional backup medium, not a key generator or decryption tool.
