Windows Appearance and Performance Settings: Improve Responsiveness Without Guesswork

To adjust Windows for faster response, open Start and search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. Open the matching Control Panel dialog, select the Visual Effects tab, choose Adjust for best performance, and select Apply. This disables many animations, shadows, smoothing effects, and other visual treatments that consume system resources. Microsoft says the change can improve responsiveness, but it does not promise a universal percentage gain: the result depends on your hardware, drivers, background activity, storage, and workload.

Appearance and speed are separate decisions. You can keep a polished interface while changing only a few expensive effects, or use Windows 11 power and graphics controls for a specific workload. The sections below show which setting to use, what it changes, what it costs in battery life or readability, and how to reverse it.

Use Visual Effects first when Windows feels sluggish

Exact steps in Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  3. Open the result with that exact name. Windows opens the Performance Options dialog.
  4. On Visual Effects, select Adjust for best performance.
  5. Select Apply, then OK. Windows may redraw open windows or briefly change how the desktop behaves.

The preset is system-wide. It does not select a faster graphics card, close applications, or repair a failing drive; it simply tells Windows to use fewer interface effects. Microsoft describes the purpose as improving responsiveness because Windows 11 visual effects can use system resources. The same control is available in Windows 10.

What the preset changes

Adjust for best performance turns off the collection of effects selected by Windows, which can include animated controls and elements, window animations, menu fades, shadows, smooth scrolling, thumbnail previews, and font-smoothing options. The exact visual result can vary with the Windows edition and the individual options shown in the dialog. Expect a plainer desktop, less motion, and fewer transitions rather than a dramatic change to application processing speed.

Keep a visual effect while removing the rest

If the all-or-nothing preset is too stark, choose Custom in the same dialog. Enable only the effects you value, such as Smooth edges of screen fonts or Show thumbnails instead of icons, and leave animations and shadows disabled. Select Apply to test the combination. This approach trades a small amount of resource use for readability or easier file browsing.

Restore the default appearance

Return to the dialog through the same Start search and choose Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer or Adjust for best appearance, depending on the options displayed. You can also select Custom and re-enable individual effects. Applying a different preset is reversible and does not remove personal files or installed programs.

How much faster will Windows become?

There is no Microsoft-published speed percentage for this change. A computer already limited by a busy processor, low available memory, slow storage, graphics-driver problems, or heavy startup activity may feel more responsive after effects are removed. A newer computer with ample resources may show little measurable difference because the effects were not its bottleneck.

Visual Effects primarily changes the time Windows spends drawing the interface. It can make opening menus, dragging windows, switching tasks, or interacting with File Explorer feel less delayed. It does not guarantee higher frame rates in every game, faster internet, shorter video-rendering times, or quicker application calculations. Those outcomes depend on the component and workload creating the delay.

Situation Likely value of reducing effects What to check as well
Older or resource-constrained PC Potentially noticeable improvement in desktop responsiveness Startup programs, available storage, malware, updates, and Task Manager usage
Modern PC that is slow only during heavy work Usually a minor interface change Which process is consuming CPU, memory, disk, or GPU resources
Games with low frame rates May make Windows feel lighter but is not a complete gaming fix Game graphics settings, drivers, power mode, and the correct GPU
Laptop that needs longer battery life Can reduce some drawing work without increasing the power target Use a power-efficient mode and close unnecessary background activity

Judge the result by repeating the task that felt slow before the change. If menus respond more quickly but a game, browser tab, or export remains slow, investigate that workload separately rather than repeatedly changing visual options.

Windows 11 Power mode: performance versus battery and heat

Power mode is independent of Visual Effects. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft lists Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance.

Power mode Use it when Trade-off
Best power efficiency You are on battery or want lower energy use Windows favors efficiency over peak performance
Balanced You need a general-purpose setting It compromises between responsiveness and energy use
Best performance You are plugged in and need maximum responsiveness for a demanding task Microsoft warns that it increases power consumption; a laptop can lose battery faster and run warmer

Hardware and the computer manufacturer can affect which choices appear. If Windows will not expose the expected mode, a custom power plan may be active. Microsoft notes that selecting Balanced in Control Panel first can be necessary before the Windows 11 Power mode selector becomes available.

Use Best performance for a deliberate, demanding session rather than as a permanent laptop setting. Connect the charger, provide adequate ventilation, and switch back to Balanced or Best power efficiency when the task is complete. Changing this setting does not alter the Visual Effects preset; the two controls address different resource decisions.

Improve windowed gaming in Windows 11

Windows 11 has a separate graphics option for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and enable Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says the feature is intended to improve gaming performance for those game types and display modes.

Choose a GPU for one game

On systems with more than one GPU, the Graphics page can expose per-app choices such as Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. Add or select the game in the app list, open its options, choose the desired GPU preference, and save. High performance generally targets the more capable GPU and can consume more energy; Power saving favors the efficient GPU for lighter workloads or longer battery life.

This option does not apply equally to every game. DirectX versions, exclusive full-screen modes, the game engine, drivers, and the computer’s GPU configuration all matter. If a title is already running in exclusive full screen, changing the windowed-games option may have no effect. Restart the game after changing its graphics preference so Windows and the game establish a new graphics path.

Appearance controls that do not require sacrificing usability

Light and dark modes

Windows includes built-in light and dark modes for the interface. Open Settings > Personalization > Colors and choose the mode that is comfortable in your environment. Dark mode changes the visual treatment of supported Windows surfaces and applications; it is an appearance preference, not a guaranteed performance optimization.

Accent colors, title bars, and transparency

In Settings > Personalization > Colors, choose an accent color and decide whether Windows applies it to Start, the taskbar, title bars, and window borders. The same area includes transparency controls. Transparency can make menus and surfaces look layered, while disabling it produces a more solid appearance and may reduce a small amount of compositing work. Keep it enabled if the visual hierarchy helps you navigate; disable it when you are pursuing the simplest interface.

Themes

Themes combine desktop backgrounds, window colors, sounds, and mouse-cursor settings. Manage them under Settings > Personalization > Themes. A theme can change several appearance properties at once, so record the current theme or take a screenshot before experimenting if you need to restore a familiar setup.

Contrast themes and color filters

Contrast themes increase separation between text, controls, and backgrounds. Color filters can alter how colors are displayed for people with visual impairments or color-vision differences. These features are accessibility controls, not speed tweaks. Open Settings > Accessibility and choose Contrast themes or Color filters; preview the selection and apply it only after checking that important controls remain distinguishable.

Other actions for a genuinely slow PC

Microsoft treats Visual Effects as one intervention among several. If the computer remains slow, work through the following checks rather than assuming every delay comes from animation.

  • Install Windows and optional driver updates. Updated system and hardware drivers can address compatibility and performance problems. Restart when Windows requests it.
  • Scan for malware. Unwanted software can consume CPU, memory, network, or disk resources. Use the security tools already supplied with Windows or your organization’s approved scanner.
  • Free storage. Use Settings > System > Storage and Storage Sense, or open Disk Cleanup. Remove temporary files only after confirming that needed downloads and installers are backed up.
  • Uninstall unused applications. Remove programs you no longer need through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Some applications leave services or startup entries, so review the result afterward.
  • Disable unnecessary startup apps. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and disable items you recognize as unnecessary. Do not disable security, hardware, or business-management tools without knowing what they do.
  • Limit background permissions. For supported applications, review background activity in their Windows app settings and prevent programs from running when you do not need updates or notifications from them.
  • Optimize drives. Open the Windows drive-optimization tool and allow Windows to identify the appropriate operation. Do not treat this as a substitute for replacing failing storage or maintaining backups.
  • Inspect Task Manager. On Processes and Performance, look for sustained CPU, memory, disk, or GPU usage. Sort by each column, identify the application responsible, and close it normally or investigate its settings.
  • Turn off unnecessary notifications. Open Settings > System > Notifications and disable alerts that interrupt work or wake background components. Keep security and account alerts enabled.
  • Restart Windows. A restart clears temporary state and completes updates. It is a diagnostic step, not proof that the underlying cause has been fixed.

Choose settings by your actual goal

Goal Recommended starting point Watch for
Make the desktop feel more responsive Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance Reduced animations, shadows, smoothing, and thumbnail effects
Retain readable text and previews Visual Effects > Custom, then keep font smoothing or thumbnails enabled A small portion of the resource use remains
Maximize plugged-in laptop performance Windows 11 Power mode > Best performance Higher power use, faster battery drain when unplugged, and more heat
Extend battery life Best power efficiency, fewer background apps, and restrained visual effects Demanding tasks may take longer
Improve a compatible windowed game Graphics > Optimizations for windowed games, then review per-app GPU choice Only supported DirectX 10/11 windowed or borderless games are targeted
Improve visibility Contrast themes, color filters, colors, and themes in Personalization or Accessibility Appearance changes may not improve speed

Troubleshooting and safe rollback

The screen looks too plain

Open the Performance Options dialog, select Custom, and re-enable only the effects that solve the problem. Font smoothing is usually the first option to reconsider if text appears jagged; thumbnail previews are useful if you identify files visually. Apply one change at a time so you know which effect matters to you.

The setting did not make a noticeable difference

That result is normal on a computer whose bottleneck is elsewhere. Check Task Manager while reproducing the slowdown, then follow the update, storage, startup, malware, and background-activity checks. If only one program is slow, use that program’s own graphics, cache, or workload settings instead of repeatedly changing Windows-wide effects.

A game became worse after a graphics change

Return the game’s Graphics preference to Let Windows decide, disable Optimizations for windowed games, or switch between windowed and full-screen modes for testing. Change one variable, restart the game, and compare the same scene or workload. Keep the setting that is stable for your hardware, not simply the one labeled High performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The laptop runs hot or loses charge quickly

Switch Power mode from Best performance to Balanced or Best power efficiency, close unneeded applications, and improve airflow. Visual Effects changes do not justify running a laptop at a higher power target all day. If heat persists during light use, investigate background processes, updates, and hardware health.

Practical order of operations

  1. Measure the symptom: slow menus, delayed app launches, low game frame rates, short battery life, or poor readability.
  2. Apply the setting that matches that symptom rather than changing every control at once.
  3. Repeat the same task and note whether the response improved.
  4. If it did not, inspect the relevant resource in Task Manager and address updates, storage, startup programs, malware, or background activity.
  5. Keep the least aggressive setting that solves the problem, especially on a battery-powered computer.

The built-in controls are safe to experiment with because they change preferences rather than personal data. Their benefits are workload-dependent: Visual Effects can reduce interface overhead, Power mode changes the performance-versus-energy policy, windowed-game optimization targets a defined class of games, and Personalization and Accessibility controls change how Windows looks and reads. Treat them as separate tools and you can improve responsiveness without giving up the visual or accessibility features you actually use.
