But Windows App is not a universal replacement for every Remote Desktop scenario: Microsoft’s current support matrix lists Remote Desktop Services on Windows as unsupported.
What changed when Remote Desktop became Windows App?
Windows App is the successor name for Microsoft’s Remote Desktop client experience, not a new remote desktop protocol or a replacement for every Windows remote-access utility. Microsoft introduced the name with version 11.0.0 on September 19, 2024, alongside an updated interface and additional functions. Its release notes describe the change as: “Starting with version 11.0.0, the Remote Desktop app is named Windows App, which includes an updated user interface and additional functionalities.” Microsoft’s Windows App release notes detail the transition.

The redesigned connection center groups resources into Devices, Apps, and Favorites. Microsoft also lists support for multiple Microsoft Entra accounts and Cloud PC actions such as restart and restore. These are product capabilities; availability can differ by platform and service.

Choose by the service you need to reach and the device you are connecting from. Windows App supports Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box on Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android/Chrome OS, the web, and Meta Quest, subject to platform-specific exceptions. Use the table as a starting point, then follow your organization’s deployment instructions.

The older Windows Store app’s 2025 block applied to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box. Microsoft said its Remote Desktop Services and remote PC connections were unaffected by that block; that statement does not mean Windows App supports every such connection on Windows.
How do you migrate on Windows?
Windows users need to migrate manually; the old client does not automatically upgrade. Microsoft says the two apps can coexist temporarily while users train. If the Remote Desktop client was installed and managed by an organization, users may not have permission to remove it, so an administrator may need to handle deployment and removal. Microsoft’s migration page gives platform-specific guidance.

- Check which service and connection type you use, and confirm your organization’s approved client and deployment instructions.
- Install Windows App using the distribution method specified by your organization.
- Sign in and verify that the expected resources appear. Organization services require a work or school account provided by an administrator; personal Microsoft accounts cannot be used to sign in. Supported remote PC connections can be used without signing in. Microsoft explains sign-in requirements.
- Uninstall the old Remote Desktop client when you are ready, unless your administrator manages its removal. Temporary coexistence is an option during training.
Will Windows App keep the features you need?
Microsoft lists multiple-monitor support, custom and dynamic display resolutions and scaling, device redirection (including webcams, audio, storage, and printers), Microsoft Teams optimizations, and multiple account switching. These capabilities do not guarantee identical behavior across every operating system or remote service. Check the support information for your specific combination, especially if a peripheral, display setup, or Teams feature is essential. - Service: Identify whether you connect to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, or a remote PC.
- Platform: Check support for the client device you will use; a service supported on one platform may have exceptions on another.
- Account and deployment: Organization services require an administrator-provided work or school account, and managed installations may require IT to install or remove the client.
- Required features: Confirm support for needed monitors, redirected devices, or Teams optimizations on your particular service and platform.
Microsoft’s documentation establishes product support and lifecycle details, not comparative latency, reliability on an individual network, or which interface a particular user will find easier. Those outcomes depend on the actual service, setup, and network.
