Can Brain-Reading AI Read Your Thoughts Without an MRI?

EEG and MEG research can decode limited, task-specific information without MRI, but current studies do not show that AI can freely read private thoughts or that consumer headsets can do so.

Yes, some research systems can decode limited, task-specific information from EEG or MEG recordings without MRI—but they cannot freely read private thoughts. Their results depend on the kind of brain signal, the task, training and participant cooperation. A reported match between brain activity and a supplied audio clip, for example, is not the same as transcribing someone’s unspoken thoughts. No evidence cited here establishes a consumer device that can read general thoughts.

What “reading thoughts” means in these studies

Brain-decoding AI learns patterns that connect measured brain activity with a defined task or signal. Depending on the experiment, that might mean listening to supplied speech, silently reading text, imagining a story, or attempting to speak. Those tasks are not interchangeable, and none establishes unrestricted access to a person’s subjective mental life.

It also matters what the system produces. Selecting which of many recorded audio segments best matches a brain signal, generating a rough semantic summary, and transcribing exact words are different outcomes. Their accuracy scores cannot be treated as a single measure of how well an AI “reads thoughts.”

What can work without an MRI?

EEG and MEG can reveal speech-related information

EEG measures electrical activity using sensors on the scalp. MEG measures magnetic fields produced by brain activity and uses specialized equipment. Neither method requires an MRI scanner, but both record noisy signals that vary between people and sessions.

In a 2023 study, Alexandre Défossez and colleagues combined four public datasets covering 175 volunteers recorded with EEG or MEG while they listened to short stories and sentences. For one task, the model matched three seconds of MEG activity to the corresponding speech segment among more than 1,000 possibilities. The researchers reported up to 41% accuracy on average across participants and up to 80% for the best participants. These are results for a constrained matching task—not a transcript of arbitrary thoughts. The authors said the model’s predictions relied mainly on lexical and contextual semantic representations, and described EEG and MEG as noisy and variable across sessions and people. An EEG cap experiment decoded silent reading, not open-ended inner monologue

The University of Technology Sydney described DeWave, a system that recorded scalp EEG while participants silently read passages. Its account reported 29 participants and a score of around 40% BLEU-1. BLEU is a text-similarity measure; it does not mean that 40% of a person’s thoughts were decoded. UTS noted that the system could produce a semantically similar word rather than the exact word—for instance, a general category instead of a specific noun. The result applies to the study’s silent-reading task and protocol, not to unrestricted thought transcription. See the University of Technology Sydney’s account.

Why the best-known language decoder used an MRI scanner

The 2023 study that brought broad attention to brain-based language decoding used fMRI, not a portable EEG cap. fMRI tracks changes in blood oxygenation associated with brain activity. According to the NIH account, each of three participants listened to 16 hours of spoken stories to train a decoder specific to that person. On new material, it sometimes reproduced words or phrases, but more often generated text that captured the gist without matching the original wording.

The researchers also tested imagined stories and silent-film viewing. NIH reported that a decoder trained on one participant did not work for another. Successful training required active cooperation, and participants could disrupt decoding by focusing on a different task. The scanner-based system was not portable or usable outside the laboratory. Alexander Huth, the study’s lead and a University of Texas at Austin researcher, called the result “a real leap forward” over earlier non-invasive work that typically handled single words or short sentences. That progress was still a constrained semantic reconstruction experiment, not general-purpose mind reading. Read the NIH account of the study.

What invasive brain interfaces can—and cannot—show

Implanted electrodes can record higher-quality neural signals than non-invasive methods and have enabled research into speech prostheses for people who cannot communicate through speech. Such systems are being developed as assistive communication technology; they are not consumer mind-reading devices.

A 2024 study of internal speech used intracranial recordings from single neurons in the human supramarginal gyrus. Its authors described the work as “a proof-of-concept for a high-performance internal speech BMI.” That characterization applies to the specific invasive study. It does not show that EEG, MEG or consumer headsets can decode unrestricted inner speech. The paper discusses limitations of non-invasive approaches, including signal quality and resolution. Brain-computer interfaces for communication have potential medical uses, but established systems have required invasive surgery, according to NIH. Their clinical aims and requirements should not be conflated with consumer claims about reading thoughts. See NIH’s overview of brain decoders and assistive communication.

How to evaluate a brain-decoding claim

  • Signal method: Is it fMRI, EEG, MEG or implanted electrodes? “Non-invasive” does not necessarily mean portable; an fMRI decoder still requires a scanner.
  • Task: Did participants listen to supplied speech, silently read supplied text, imagine a limited set of stories, attempt speech or produce unconstrained inner speech? Ask what was actually decoded.
  • Training and cooperation: How much participant-specific training was needed? Could the model work for someone new, and did the participant have to cooperate?
  • Output and metric: Is the result exact transcription, semantic gist, a choice among candidate segments or a text-similarity score? Check the candidate set and metric before interpreting a percentage.
  • Setting and purpose: Was this a laboratory proof of concept, a clinical communication aid or a product intended for consumers? Evidence for one does not establish the others.

Can you buy a device that reads your thoughts?

The studies described here do not establish a consumer device that can read general thoughts. An ordinary EEG headset should not be treated as a way to reproduce laboratory language-decoding research: a sensor recording brain activity is not, by itself, a general-purpose thought decoder. The published demonstrations depend on specific tasks, trained models and—in some cases—specialized laboratory equipment or implanted electrodes.
