The official changelogs confirm those two additions, but do not list the ordinary cave-mob roster. Ice Caves are documented in a Java snapshot and an experimental Bedrock preview, so check your game version before searching for them.
Which mobs are confirmed in Ice Caves?
Both current official changelogs name Strays and Frostbites as additional Ice Caves spawns, alongside “mobs that normally spawn in caves.” The Java changelog states: “In addition to the mobs that normally spawn in caves, Strays and Frostbites can also spawn here.” The Bedrock Preview changelog names the same additions.
The phrase “mobs that normally spawn in caves” is not expanded into a complete list in either changelog. As a result, the official notes confirm Strays and Frostbites, but do not establish every other mob that may appear or whether the ordinary cave roster differs between editions.
Which versions include Ice Caves?
| Edition | Build documented | Availability and setting |
|---|---|---|
| Java | 26.4 Snapshot 3 | Snapshot changelog published October 6, 2026; Ice Caves can generate under colder Overworld biomes. |
| Bedrock | Preview 26.60.29 | Preview changelog published September 30, 2026; Ice Caves are an experimental feature and can appear beneath low-temperature biomes. |
These notes establish Ice Caves in the named snapshot and preview builds; they do not establish availability in a stable release. Check your edition and build before looking for the biome. Read the Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 changelog and the Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog for their respective details.

Does lighting affect Ice Caves mob spawns?
Hostile mob spawning is generally associated with night and poorly lit places such as caves, according to Minecraft’s general mob guide. Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs Part II feature overview also describes a change under which mobs “will now only spawn in complete darkness.” That is historical context for general mob spawning, not a stated Ice Caves-specific threshold. The Ice Caves changelogs do not give a light level or separate lighting rule for this biome.

The Java snapshot describes Ice Caves as made mainly of Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles, occasional snow patches, and Ice Crystals. The changelog’s biome description can help you recognize the setting, but the mobs explicitly added there remain Strays and Frostbites.
