Windows 7 has been unsupported since 2020, and Steam ended support for it in 2024. Some older games can still run on Windows 7, but that does not make it a dependable platform for current Steam access or modern releases. Neither operating system is inherently faster in every game: frame rates depend on the hardware, game, drivers, graphics settings, and API.
Which Windows version is better for gaming?
Choose Windows 11 if your PC is eligible and you want current operating-system support and the broadest practical path to current Steam and game compatibility. Choose Windows 7 only for a specific legacy setup where the games and hardware are known to work, ideally without exposing the PC to the internet or sensitive accounts.

That recommendation is about support and access, not a claim that Windows 11 always delivers higher FPS. A game may continue to run on an unsupported system, but future client updates, drivers, security fixes, and game updates are separate issues.
Will Steam and your games still work on Windows 7?
Valve ended Steam client support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 on January 1, 2024. Valve recommends moving to a newer Windows version to maintain Steam and game compatibility. This did not remotely disable every previously installed game: some older titles may still launch, but the unsupported client no longer has a dependable path to future updates or compatibility fixes. Windows 11 is on the current Steam support path, but it is not a guarantee that every game will work. Individual games can impose their own requirements for Windows versions, graphics features, drivers, or other software.
Does Windows 7 support DirectX 12?
Not as a general, built-in route for running any Direct3D 12 game. Microsoft documented a limited deployment path for developers: a game must include Windows 7-specific binaries, and the supported target is Windows 7 SP1 64-bit. The developer must choose to package and support that path; users cannot enable it to make arbitrary Direct3D 12 games compatible.

Microsoft’s documentation also lists limitations, including no PIX or D3D12 debug layer, no shared surfaces or cross-API interoperability, no SLI/LDA, no D3D12 video, and no WARP support. For Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft says those operating systems already include the latest DirectX available for them. In all cases, the game and graphics hardware still need to support the required API and features. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 on Windows 7 documentation · Microsoft’s DirectX guidance

How Windows 7 and Windows 11 compare for gaming
| Factor | Windows 7 | Windows 11 |
|---|---|---|
| OS security support | Support ended January 14, 2020; regular security updates have ended. | Home and Pro remain in support, with end dates that depend on the release. |
| Steam | Steam support ended January 1, 2024. Previously installed games may still run, but ongoing compatibility is not assured. | Current Steam support path; each game’s requirements still apply. |
| Graphics APIs | Older APIs may work with suitable game and driver support. Direct3D 12 is a limited, developer-packaged option for Windows 7 SP1 64-bit. | Includes the latest DirectX available for Windows 11; GPU and game support remain necessary. |
| Hardware eligibility | Can run on older hardware if suitable drivers and games are available. | Requires a compatible 64-bit CPU, TPM 2.0, at least 4 GB RAM, at least 64 GB storage, and DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. |
| Expected FPS | No universal advantage established; results depend on the system and game. | No universal advantage established; results depend on the system and game. |
Windows 7’s security status matters on a gaming PC
Microsoft ended Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. Regular security updates ended as well. The limited Extended Security Updates program applied only to qualifying editions and licensing arrangements; its final year ended in January 2023. A Windows 7 gaming PC connected to the internet therefore lacks ordinary Microsoft security updates. That risk is particularly relevant if you use the same machine for browsing, email, purchases, or accounts tied to game services.
Microsoft lists Windows 11 Home and Pro as supported, with lifecycle dates varying by release. Its lifecycle page lists version 26H2 from September 29, 2026, through October 10, 2028; check the current page for the support dates of the specific release installed on your PC. Check whether your PC can run Windows 11
Windows 11 eligibility is a set of minimum installation requirements, not a promise of good gaming performance. Microsoft’s listed requirements include a 1 GHz or faster compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB or more storage, TPM 2.0, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with a WDDM 2.0 driver. A PC can meet these thresholds and still be unsuitable for a particular game or graphics setting.

- Check the exact PC configuration. Verify the processor, motherboard and firmware settings, TPM version, memory, storage, and graphics hardware against Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance.
- Check the game’s requirements. Confirm the required Windows version, graphics API or features, and GPU support for each game you care about.
- Decide whether to upgrade or replace the PC. If the system fails Windows 11 requirements, compare the cost of a qualifying computer with supported alternatives before buying components or an installation product. An OS license cannot make unsupported hardware eligible.
For the current requirements, see Microsoft’s Windows 11 Compatibility Cookbook.

There is no universal OS-only FPS winner established for these versions. A valid comparison would need the same PC, game build, driver versions, API, resolution, graphics settings, and repeatable test method. It should report more than average FPS: frame-time consistency and 1% lows can reveal stutter that an average hides. Compatibility, whether the game launches, and whether it receives updates are also different questions from raw frame rate.
Be cautious of blanket claims that one version is always faster. A result from one game or configuration does not establish performance across different GPUs, drivers, and titles.
What Steam’s Windows survey can—and cannot—tell you
Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey lists Windows 11 64-bit at 75.08%, Windows 10 64-bit at 24.85%, and “Other” at 0.08% in its Windows-version table. These figures describe surveyed Steam users, not all PC gamers, and they do not prove that a particular game runs better or is compatible on a given version. Steam Hardware & Software Survey
Quick Recap
Make the choice based on the games and PC you have
- For current online play and Steam: use Windows 11 if the PC meets its requirements, and verify the requirements of each game.
- For a collection of older offline games: Windows 7 may remain usable if those titles and the required drivers work, but its unsupported status makes an internet-connected, everyday setup a poor fit.
- For a PC that fails Windows 11 eligibility: do not assume a license or one component purchase will solve it. Check the complete system and weigh a qualifying replacement against the games and uses you need.
