Start with software and graphics settings

Choose a power mode that fits the game and your noise tolerance
When the manufacturer recommends it, play while the laptop is connected to its power adapter. Begin with a balanced or performance profile, then adjust based on the game and how much fan noise you can tolerate. Mode names and controls differ by manufacturer and model; ASUS gaming modes, for example, are available only on supported devices, and its Turbo mode requires the adapter on supported models. Modes make tradeoffs rather than providing maximum performance, minimum noise, and low power use all at once. NVIDIA’s Power Mode Reference describes Balanced as the default option for balancing power consumption, fan noise, and gaming performance; Performance prioritizes the highest gaming performance when fan noise is not an issue; Quiet reduces fan noise while maintaining good gaming performance. Give the cooling system clear airflow
Put the laptop on a firm, flat desk or table, not a bed, sofa, or pillow. Keep intake and exhaust vents unobstructed and leave space around the chassis so air can circulate. Understand fan noise before treating it as a fault
Fans commonly become louder during resource-intensive games because they are removing heat. Sound by itself does not establish that the fan is defective. Check Task Manager for unexpected CPU or memory activity, ensure the vents are clear, and use the laptop maker’s diagnostic if the fan behavior seems abnormal. Do not use a universal temperature threshold or fan-curve expectation to judge every laptop: behavior depends on the model, workload, ambient conditions, and selected mode. Clean dust cautiously and follow model-specific guidance
Dust or hair can obstruct vents and reduce heat dissipation. ASUS advises contacting its service center for dust-related overheating and warns that powerful airflow devices such as air compressors can damage fan blades. - Power down the laptop and disconnect its power source before cleaning.
- Check the laptop maker’s instructions for your model and follow its precautions, including keeping canned air at the recommended distance.
- Do not use an air compressor.
- If overheating related to dust persists, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
When to escalate troubleshooting
If the laptop remains unusually hot or fan behavior still seems abnormal after checking background activity and airflow, run the manufacturer’s supported fan or hardware diagnostic. If it reports a fault, or dust-related overheating persists, seek help through the manufacturer or an authorized service channel rather than opening the laptop or applying generic cleaning instructions that may not fit the model.
