To buy PC games cheaply without getting scammed, start with the publisher’s store or a retailer the publisher identifies as authorized for your country. Compare the same edition and activation platform, check region restrictions, and read the seller’s refund and support terms before paying. A low price alone does not prove a listing is unsafe—but unclear authorization, seller identity, or sourcing is a reason to pause.
Where can I buy PC games cheap without getting scammed?
Check the game publisher’s own store and its current guidance on authorized digital retailers. Some authorized retailers sell publisher-approved keys at a discount; a key sold outside Steam is not automatically unauthorized. But approval varies by publisher, game, and region, so there is no universal list of safe stores.

For example, EA’s current guidance for its PC digital games and premium currencies lists Epic Games, Humble Bundle, and Valve/Steam as worldwide trusted retailers. It also lists Amazon storefronts in selected countries, including Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK. This is EA’s guidance for EA products, not a blanket endorsement of every product sold by those retailers. Check EA’s trusted retailer list for the specific purchase.
Ubisoft recommends buying its content from Ubisoft Store, Ubisoft Connect PC, or a company with a digital distribution agreement. Its approved distributors can vary by location; check the current approved distributor guidance for your game and country. Ubisoft warns that a key from a retailer without an agreement may be invalid or illegally obtained and can be revoked.

How to check whether a game key listing is legitimate
- Confirm publisher authorization. Look for the publisher’s own store or an official list of authorized retailers. Confirm that the retailer is approved for the publisher’s product and your region.
- Match the exact product. Check the edition, included content, language, and activation platform. A listing for the same game title may be for a different edition or a code for a different storefront.
- Check country and region restrictions. Verify where the key can be redeemed and whether it will activate in your country. Ubisoft recommends purchasing from digital retailers within your own country or region.
- Inspect the seller and checkout. Look for a clear business identity, contact details, refund policy, and secure payment. Microsoft’s general safer-shopping guidance recommends these checks; it is general software-shopping advice, not evidence that a particular game retailer is publisher-authorized.
- Compare the total price. Compare the same edition on the same activation platform across trusted retailers, including any checkout costs. EA advises checking several trusted stores and notes that unauthorized retailers often offer much lower prices. Treat an unusually low price as a reason to verify the listing, not proof of fraud by itself.
- Save the evidence. Keep the order page, receipt, confirmation email, and any messages with the seller. They may be needed if the key is invalid, the wrong product, or later revoked.
What can go wrong with unauthorized keys?
EA warns that unauthorized sellers may provide the wrong game or language version, fake, used, or stolen keys, or keys that are later disabled. It also says EA may not be able to support purchases made through unauthorized retailers. Ubisoft warns that invalid or illegally obtained keys may be revoked.
That creates more than an activation risk: if a key fails or is withdrawn, your ability to get a replacement or refund depends largely on the seller’s own support and refund process. A low price is a poor trade if the seller’s identity, sourcing, and remedies are unclear.

How refunds differ when you buy outside Steam
For a game bought through the Steam Store, Valve’s standard policy generally allows a refund request within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Exceptions and other policy details apply; check Steam’s refund policy before relying on eligibility.

That policy does not cover purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards. Valve says it cannot refund those purchases. If you buy from another retailer, read that retailer’s refund and support terms before checkout rather than assuming Steam will handle a failed key.

What to do if a key is invalid or revoked
- Contact the retailer. Give the seller your order information and explain whether the key failed to register, activated the wrong product, or was later revoked. Steam’s guidance for a revoked third-party key is to contact the seller for a refund.
- Ask for the remedy stated in the retailer’s policy. For a key that has never successfully registered, Steam directs buyers to contact the retailer for a replacement copy. Keep the seller’s response and any support case details.
- Use the right support route. Steam’s retail-key guidance says packaging or the delivery email should state when a retail or digital game is intended to be registered through Steam. If the key is for another platform, contact that platform’s retailer or publisher support as applicable.

Use more than price to compare two offers. Prefer the one with clear publisher authorization, compatible region and platform, the exact edition you want, transparent total cost, and a usable refund or support route. If the game matters to you and you want Steam’s standard refund process, buying directly through the Steam Store preserves that route; Valve cannot refund a third-party key purchase.
