If Windows 11 updates are not downloading, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then work through restart, connection, and storage checks. Use the error code on screen to choose more involved repairs; not every step applies to every update problem. Stop when updates work, and back up personal files before deeper troubleshooting.
Try these fixes in order
A download that appears stalled can be related to connectivity, update size, network settings, low storage, stopped services, or damaged system files. An error code can help narrow the next step, but it does not prove a single cause. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter guidance recommends starting with Get Help on Windows 11.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start and search for Get Help, then open the app.
- Search Get Help for Windows Update troubleshooting and follow the prompts for the automated troubleshooter.
- Apply any suggested changes, restart if asked, and try Windows Update again.
The available troubleshooters and labels can change; Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters page explains how to access them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Restart the PC and retry
Restart Windows, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. A restart can clear a temporary condition or complete a pending update step.

3. Check your internet connection
Confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected and working reliably. If the connection is unstable, reconnect or try a more stable network before retrying the download. Avoid interrupting the connection while an update is downloading.
4. Check available storage
Open Settings > System > Storage to review free space. If space is low, remove files you no longer need or move personal files after backing them up. Update size and required working space vary.
Microsoft lists 16 GB free for certain 32-bit OS upgrade cases and 20 GB for certain 64-bit OS upgrade cases. Those figures relate to specific upgrade guidance; they are not universal minimums for routine Windows 11 updates. See Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance for the context.

5. Check Windows Update services when the error points to them
If the message or code suggests that the update service is disabled or stopped, check Microsoft’s instructions for that specific error before changing services. For example, Microsoft associates 0x80070422 with a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. Avoid changing unrelated service settings: this step is not a general remedy for every slow or stalled download.
6. Clear the download cache only when indicated
Some update errors can involve downloaded update files or the cache. Microsoft associates 0x8007000d with possible update-file or cache problems, but the code alone does not confirm the cause. Follow the current instructions for the matching error on Microsoft’s troubleshooting page. Cache resets involve stopping a service and removing cached files, so do not delete files from update folders without following the official steps.
7. Repair system files if corruption is plausible
System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) are built-in tools for repairing missing or corrupted Windows system files. They are not first-line fixes for every download failure. If symptoms or Microsoft’s guidance point to system-file damage, use Microsoft’s SFC instructions and follow the order and commands shown there.

8. Disconnect unnecessary devices when a compatibility issue is indicated
If the problem occurs during an upgrade or the error points to a driver or device conflict, disconnect external devices you do not need, such as removable storage, and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the particular error. Microsoft links code 0xC1900101 with a possible driver compatibility issue. Do not assume peripherals are responsible for a routine update download that has no related error clue.
9. Match the error code to Microsoft’s guidance or get support
Write down the full error code and search for that exact code in Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide. Examples of possible associations in Microsoft’s guidance include:
- 0x8007000d: possible update-file or cache problem.
- 0x80070422: possible disabled or stopped Windows Update service.
- 0x80240034: possible interrupted download or incomplete update.
- 0x800f0922: a possible insufficient-space scenario.
- 0xC1900101: possible driver compatibility issue.
These are clues, not diagnoses; use Microsoft’s current directions for the exact code. If the issue continues, contact Microsoft Support. A clean installation is a later recovery option, not a routine download fix, and should be considered only with a careful backup plan.

When Windows Update looks stuck at 0% or 100%
A percentage that has not changed for a short time does not by itself mean the update has failed. Microsoft says, “The time required to download and install updates depends on connection speed, network settings, and the size of the update.” If progress remains stuck, check the connection and storage, then retry or run the troubleshooter rather than immediately interrupting the update. See Microsoft’s guidance for updates that appear stuck.
Back up before deeper repairs
Before making more involved changes or considering recovery options, protect personal files. Microsoft advises: “Before trying any of the solutions below, make sure you back up your personal files.” Its guidance describes OneDrive and copying files to a USB drive as backup approaches. Choose cloud or removable storage based on what you can access and prefer; a USB drive is for backup, not a fix for Windows Update.
