To reimage a server for Cloudron, provision a fresh supported Ubuntu 26.04 x64 system, confirm its resources and network access, then run Cloudron’s official setup script. Reimaging erases the server’s existing contents; if you need its apps or data, secure a Cloudron backup first and restore it after preparing the new server.
What does Cloudron need on a freshly reimaged server?
Cloudron’s current installation guide specifies a fresh Ubuntu Resolute 26.04 x64 server. It lists at least 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of disk space, and requires that ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) are not blocked. Cloudron does not support ARM, LXC, Docker, or OpenVZ installations.

The 20 GB figure is a minimum requirement, not a guarantee that a server with existing apps and data will fit. Docker and app images, app and platform data, and mail all consume storage. Check the old server’s actual use and allow room for growth before choosing the replacement disk size; see Cloudron’s server documentation.
Use your provider’s fresh Ubuntu 26.04 x64 provisioning or reimage option. There is no universal provider-side reimage control or prebuilt Cloudron disk image in Cloudron’s installation instructions: the provider’s job is to leave you with the supported Ubuntu environment, and Cloudron is installed afterward.

How do you reimage and install Cloudron?
1. Decide whether this is a new installation or a recovery
If this is a new server with no data to retain, proceed with a fresh Ubuntu installation. If you are replacing or recovering an existing Cloudron server, create a complete backup before reimaging. Keep a copy somewhere independent of the server being changed; Cloudron warns that backups stored only on that same server should be downloaded before server changes.
2. Provision Ubuntu and check access
Confirm the server is x64, runs the specified Ubuntu release, meets the RAM and disk requirements, and has ports 80 and 443 available through any provider firewall or network rules. Make sure you can reach the server over the network and have its public IP address.

3. Prepare the domain and DNS
Cloudron requires a domain. Its dashboard is typically at my.example.com, with apps using their own subdomains. You can select an automated DNS provider or use wildcard or manual DNS options. With manual DNS, point the my subdomain to the server’s public IP and create records for app subdomains before installing apps. Existing DNS records are not changed during Cloudron setup. Port 80 must be reachable for the documented HTTP certificate validation flows. See Cloudron’s domains and certificates guide.

Will reimaging delete Cloudron apps and data?
Yes. Treat a provider reimage or fresh operating-system installation as destructive: it can remove the existing Cloudron installation and everything stored on that server. The safe path for retaining apps and data is to back up first, install Cloudron on the fresh server, then use Cloudron’s documented restore or migration process. A backup can only be restored to a Cloudron version that matches the version used to create it.

Should you restore a backup or move the old Cloudron server?
Cloudron documents two recovery paths in its backup and restore guide. Choose based on whether the old installation is still accessible:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Situation | Cloudron path | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| The old server is unavailable and only backups remain | Restore Cloudron | Recreates the installation from backup data on the new server. |
| The old Cloudron installation is still accessible | Move Cloudron to another server | Uses the documented migration process to transfer the installation. |
The restored server is documented as a clone of users, groups, email, apps, DNS settings, and certificates. Install the Cloudron version matching the backup. If you installed the wrong version, Cloudron’s instructions say to start over with a fresh Ubuntu installation.
Best Value
For wildcard, manual, or no-op DNS configurations, update the dashboard domain to the new IP and make sure app domains point correctly for restored apps. If the server has a new public IP, DNS changes may be needed as part of the cutover.
How can you test the restore before switching DNS?
Cloudron supports a dry-run restore that skips DNS updates. You can test the restored server using local /etc/hosts overrides, without sending normal visitors to the replacement server. Follow the restore guide’s procedure, then verify that the Network view shows the new server’s IP and test the restored apps and data. Sync DNS when you are ready to switch. Keep the old server until the new installation and its restored data have been verified; do not delete it as part of the initial reimage.
