Windows 11 Update Stuck? 10 Ways to Fix Failed Updates

Start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then use your error code to choose the right fix for a stuck or failed Windows 11 update.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Windows 11 update appears frozen or fails to install, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Then restart, check your connection and storage, and use the exact error code to choose the right next step. A slow progress bar is not necessarily a stuck update, and no single fix applies to every failure.

Try these 10 fixes in order

Start with the low-risk checks. If Windows shows an error code, use the guidance for that specific code; it may be more relevant than following the steps in order. Before deeper repair work, back up important personal files and follow any instructions Windows displays.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help

Open the Get Help app, search for Windows Update troubleshooting, and run the automated troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and apply any recommended fixes. Microsoft recommends this as the starting point for Windows 11 update problems. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter instructions.

2. Restart, then check for updates again

Restart the PC if the troubleshooter asks you to, or if an update is waiting for a restart. After Windows starts again, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. A restart can complete a pending update stage, but it will not resolve every cause of failure.

3. Check the internet connection

Confirm that the PC is online and the connection is stable. Download time varies with connection speed and network settings, so a weak or interrupted connection can make an update take longer or prevent it from completing. If you use Wi-Fi, check that you are connected to the intended network before trying again.

4. Check available disk space

Open Settings > System > Storage to see how much space is available. If the drive is nearly full, remove files you no longer need or use Windows’ storage options before retrying. Space needs depend on the update and situation: Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives storage figures for particular upgrade scenarios, not a universal minimum for every Windows 11 quality update. See Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance for the specific error or upgrade case.

5. Record the exact error code and follow its guidance

In Settings > Windows Update, note the full error code shown beside the failed update. Microsoft documents different possible causes for different codes, so do not assume that a fix for one error applies to another. Search the code in Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting article and follow the matching instructions. If the relevant guidance calls for a security-software change, do so only for that case and restore protection afterward.

6. Check whether the update is actually stalled

Installation time depends on the update’s size, network settings and connection speed. A percentage that has not changed immediately does not prove the update is frozen. If progress remains at the same percentage for a long time, check again and run the troubleshooter rather than repeatedly interrupting the PC. Microsoft’s guidance covers cases where Windows Update remains at 0% or 100%, as well as installations that stop between 51% and 99%: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

7. Follow the matching cache or service instructions

If the error-specific Microsoft guidance points to an update download cache or Windows Update services, follow those instructions exactly. Cache and service resets are targeted repairs, not a reason to delete unrelated files or change settings at random. Use the steps in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for the symptom or error you have.

8. Repair system files with DISM, then SFC

Use these commands if system-file corruption is suspected or Microsoft’s guidance recommends them. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the commands in this order, and leave the window open until each operation completes:

  2. sfc /scannow

Wait for verification to reach 100% before closing Command Prompt. Microsoft documents the DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker instructions. These tools repair Windows system files; they are later troubleshooting steps, not the first response to every update failure.

9. Use Windows Update Assistant only for a feature update

If the missing update is a Windows feature update, the Windows Update Assistant is an option for manually installing it on a compatible PC. It is not a general fix for quality updates; Microsoft directs users to Settings for those. The Assistant does not run on ARM-based PCs. Check Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant guidance before using it.

10. Reinstall the current Windows version using Windows Update

If Windows itself needs repair, Windows 11 may offer Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update. Choose Reinstall now if the option is available, then follow the on-screen prompts. This recovery option reinstalls the current version and is designed to preserve apps, files and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet throughout the process. Details are in Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version of Windows.

When to stop and get help

If the same error persists after you have followed the steps for its code, or Windows cannot complete a repair, avoid repeating disruptive fixes without a reason. Keep the error code and the update name, protect important files, and follow Microsoft’s guidance for that specific problem. A USB flash drive is one way to copy important files before a deeper repair, but it does not fix the update itself.
