Dow and Nasdaq Rise After Weak Jobs Report; Nvidia and SpaceX Gain, but Risks Remain

U.S. stocks rose on Oct. 2, 2026, and the Nasdaq Composite reached a record high, after weaker-than-expected hiring reduced traders’ expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate increase. Nvidia and SpaceX also advanced. But the rally was not a clear all-market signal: Treasury yields rebounded during the session, the S&P 500 was on track for a weekly loss, and Reuters counted far more Nasdaq 52-week lows than highs.

For readers asking what to do now, the practical answer is to treat the session as a news-driven market move, not a stand-alone reason to buy. The available summary of the Investors.com article characterizes Nvidia, SpaceX and Bloom Energy as being in “buy areas,” but does not establish the exact entry levels or technical setups behind that label.

Why did stocks rise after a weak jobs report?

The U.S. employment report showed payrolls increased by 29,000, far below the 90,000 increase expected by economists polled by Reuters. Earlier months were also revised sharply lower. The disappointing hiring figures appeared to ease concern that a hot economy would add to inflation and prompt the Federal Reserve to raise rates soon.

Reuters reported that traders’ market-implied probability of an October 25-basis-point rate hike fell to 20% after the report, from 26% before it. Those figures describe traders’ expectations, not a Fed decision. As AP quoted Vanguard senior economist Adam Schickling, “This report strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to remain patient.” The same report also leaves investors weighing the possibility that weak hiring signals economic softness.

At the close, AP reported the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 250 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.2%. Reuters’ earlier intraday snapshot, published at 11:37 a.m. ET, showed the Dow up 0.36%, the S&P 500 up 0.69% and the Nasdaq up 1.15%. These are different observations from different points in the session, not conflicting closing quotes. Reuters’ Oct. 2 market report and the Associated Press session recap describe the move and its rate-expectation context.

What happened with Nvidia and SpaceX?

Nvidia rose as the broader market advanced. AP said its 1.3% gain was the single strongest force lifting the S&P 500. Reuters reported Nvidia touched an intraday record and was up 1.9% at the time of its report; that is an intraday reading, not a closing price.

SpaceX gained 6.2%, according to Reuters’ intraday report. The figures come from separate reports and snapshots, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like closing-price comparison.

What risks temper the rally?

Treasury yields can offset hopes for easier policy

Lower expectations for a near-term rate hike supported risk appetite, but bond yields remained a potential headwind for stock valuations. Reuters said a Treasury selloff tied to inflation and fiscal concerns had lifted the 10-year yield to its highest level in decades. AP reported that the yield briefly fell below 5.17%, from a Thursday peak near 5.35%, before rebounding to 5.28% as oil pared its losses. U.S. stocks also pared gains as yields and oil turned higher.

Oil and geopolitical uncertainty remain in the picture

Reuters reported Brent crude slipped below $100 amid discussion of additional European Union stock releases, with no new update on the Middle East conflict. AP described Brent trading between $98 and $103 and settling at $102.25, down 0.1%, amid uncertainty over the Iran war’s effect on oil. These are different points in the session, not competing descriptions of one price.

Index gains masked weak market breadth

Reuters counted 41 Nasdaq 52-week highs and 143 lows. For the S&P 500, the counts were nine highs and 16 lows. That disparity shows why a record for a major index does not mean most listed shares are participating in the advance.

Not every stock joined the move

Reuters reported Nike fell 5.6% after a weak outlook. Western Digital and Seagate each dropped around 14% following a report about Toshiba capacity expansion. Those declines underscore the session’s unevenness.

How to interpret the “buy areas” and decide what to do

A technical “buy area” is useful only in the context of its underlying setup and the investor’s own risk limits. The available summary does not establish the original article’s exact buy points, chart patterns, or any recommended action. Avoid turning that phrase into a claim that a stock is suitable for every investor or that a particular entry price has been confirmed.

Before acting on a similar technical label, check the details that determine whether it is actionable:

  • Entry and invalidation: Identify the exact buy point or range and what price action would show the setup has failed.
  • Price position: Check whether the stock is still within the cited range or has moved too far beyond it.
  • Confirmation: Look for the volume and price behavior the original analysis requires, rather than relying on a headline label alone.
  • Company and market context: Consider earnings and business catalysts alongside broader market breadth and rate movements.
  • Risk tolerance: Decide in advance how much loss you can accept and whether the position fits your time horizon and portfolio.

The Oct. 2 advance is best understood as a response to changed rate expectations after a weak jobs report—not proof that the economic outlook, bond-market pressure or conditions across the average stock have improved.
