How to Add an “Install CAB” Context Menu in Windows 11

An “Install CAB” right-click entry is a registry shortcut to DISM, not a built-in CAB installer. See the Windows 11 caveat and documented command-line alternatives.

You can add an “Install CAB” right-click action as a registry shortcut that calls Windows’ built-in Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool with the selected file’s path. The menu entry is a convenience wrapper, not a separate CAB installer. The specific registry recipe described below comes from a third-party Windows 10 tutorial; the available sources do not establish that it works on current Windows 11 builds or that Microsoft endorses it.

What the “Install CAB” menu action does

A CAB file is a package container; not every CAB is an update that can be installed on every Windows system. DISM provides Microsoft’s package-servicing operation: its /Add-Package option installs a specified CAB or MSU package into a target Windows image. Use /Online for the running system or /Image for an offline image. Microsoft’s DISM package-servicing reference documents the operation and its options.

The context-menu recipe is a shell verb registered for the CABFolder class under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShell. Its command invokes DISM with /online /add-package /packagepath:"%1", where %1 supplies the selected file path. That recipe is shown in a third-party tutorial whose title and description identify Windows 10; its page could not be opened for verification, and current Windows 11 compatibility is not established. The myWEBpc tutorial is an example of the approach, not Microsoft guidance.

Choose a context-menu shortcut or run the command directly

Route Setup Convenience Command output Best suited to
Registry context-menu shortcut Requires adding a registry shell verb; exact Windows 11 behavior is not established by the cited example. Offers a right-click action for repeated use. The cited source does not establish how output or errors appear in current Windows 11. Readers comfortable making and undoing a registry change.
DISM or PowerShell command Run a documented command in an elevated terminal; no menu customization is needed. Requires entering or adapting the package path each time. Command-line output is visible in the terminal. Readers who want the supported servicing command without changing the registry.

Install a CAB using Microsoft’s documented commands

Using DISM in an elevated Command Prompt

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges, replace the example path with the full path to your package, and run:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:pathpackage.cab"

Microsoft documents the general syntax as Dism /Add-Package /PackagePath:<path_to_cabfile> [/IgnoreCheck] [/PreventPending]. The package path may identify one CAB or MSU, among other documented path forms. /PreventPending skips installation if the package or image has pending online actions. Do not add /IgnoreCheck casually: it skips applicability checks.

Using PowerShell

In an elevated PowerShell session, use the documented Add-WindowsPackage cmdlet and substitute your CAB’s path:

Check package applicability and prerequisites

A successful command launch does not mean a package is suitable for the system. DISM checks package applicability, but Microsoft says it does not perform a full dependency check. Confirm the package is intended for your Windows version and configuration, and make sure any required dependencies are installed. For package-specific instructions, consult the associated Microsoft update or KB page where one exists.

Rank #3

Update instructions can impose ordering requirements that do not apply to every CAB. For example, Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 instructions for KB5124006 (OS Build 28000.3086 Preview) give an elevated DISM example for that update and say its MSU workflow may require installing files in a specific order, including checkpoint cumulative updates where applicable. Follow those directions only when working with the cited update and release context; they are not a general installation sequence for all CAB files.
