Windows 11 Thumbnail Cache: Can Previews Remain After You Delete Photos?

Windows 11 may retain a cached preview after a photo is deleted. Here’s how to clear thumbnail previews without removing the original photos.

Yes. If Windows or an application has already created and cached a photo’s thumbnail, that preview can remain after you delete the original. It is a separate, smaller preview—not the photo itself—and it may be removed by clearing the thumbnail cache. Windows can also create thumbnails again when an app requests them.

Why a thumbnail can remain after the photo is deleted

Windows does not automatically cache every image. A thumbnail has to be requested and created first. Microsoft documents a shared thumbnail-cache mechanism that applications can use; its API notes that an extracted thumbnail is cached unless the application specifies WTS_EXTRACTDONOTCACHE (Microsoft’s GetThumbnail documentation).

So deleting a source photo does not, by itself, prove that a thumbnail already stored in the cache has also disappeared. Conversely, a deleted photo will not necessarily leave a cached preview behind: it depends on whether an app requested and cached one, and on whether that cache entry remains.

Not every image creates a thumbs.db file

The familiar thumbs.db name refers to a legacy per-folder cache file; it should not be treated as a complete description of the cache used by later Windows versions. Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen explains that merely creating or copying an image does not trigger a thumbs.db file. Explorer or another application using Explorer’s thumbnail cache creates it (The Old New Thing).

How to clear cached thumbnails without deleting your photos

Use Disk Cleanup and select only the thumbnail category. Microsoft lists Thumbnails as a cleanup category in its Windows instructions (Microsoft Support: Disk Cleanup in Windows).

  1. Open Start, type Disk Cleanup, and select the app.
  2. If prompted, choose the drive you want to clean, usually C:, then select OK.
  3. In Files to delete, check Thumbnails. Check other categories only if you also intend to remove those files.
  4. Select OK, then confirm with Delete Files.

A Microsoft Q&A moderator answering a Windows 11 user said this cleanup removes the thumbnail cache and lets Windows recreate it; it does not remove original files (Microsoft Q&A response). This is a moderator’s answer to that user, rather than a formal product specification.

What happens after the cache is cleared

Clearing the cache removes the stored thumbnails, so File Explorer or another app may need to generate previews again. Microsoft’s API documentation describes this application-dependent behavior: an extracted thumbnail is cached by default unless the application requests otherwise (Microsoft’s GetThumbnail documentation). Clearing the cache is therefore a way to remove current cached previews, not a permanent ban on thumbnails.

Can you stop Windows from showing or caching thumbnails?

A 2026 Windows Latest report describes two controls: File Explorer’s Always show icons, never thumbnails option, and a Group Policy setting on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. The exact controls and their availability can vary by Windows edition and build, so check what is present on your PC before relying on either setting (Windows Latest’s report).

These controls concern future display or caching behavior; they do not establish that every application will follow the same route. Microsoft’s API documentation shows that applications can choose whether an extracted thumbnail is cached.

Does clearing thumbnails securely erase every trace?

No such guarantee follows from the documented Disk Cleanup steps. They provide a practical way to clear the thumbnail cache, but do not establish that every possible copy or storage remnant has been securely erased. Historical forensic research has examined thumbnail databases, but it is not proof that a particular deleted Windows 11 photo can be recovered from a thumbnail cache (Forensic Focus: The Forensic Analysis of Windows Thumbcache; DFRWS paper on Windows thumbnail caches). If your concern is secure erasure, treat ordinary cache cleanup as cache maintenance, not forensic assurance.
