If your Windows 11 taskbar has disappeared, first check whether it is set to hide automatically: go to Taskbar settings > Taskbar behaviors and turn off Automatically hide the taskbar. If it is still missing, try the reveal gesture, restart Windows, check for updates, and only then look at system files.
1. Turn off taskbar auto-hide
Windows 11 can hide the taskbar until you move the pointer to the screen edge. Right-click an empty part of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Expand Taskbar behaviors, then clear Automatically hide the taskbar if it is selected. Microsoft lists this setting under its taskbar behavior controls: Customize the taskbar in Windows and Make it easier to focus on tasks.

If the taskbar returns after changing the setting, it was hidden by the configured behavior rather than necessarily broken.

If you want to keep auto-hide enabled—or are not sure whether it is on—move the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen. On a touch-capable display, touch the bottom edge instead. Microsoft says the taskbar should appear when you hover over or touch that edge while auto-hide is enabled (Microsoft taskbar instructions).

If this works, the taskbar is responding as configured. If it does not appear, continue to the next checks.
3. Restart Windows
Save your work, then restart the computer from Start > Power > Restart. Restarting is one of Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for File Explorer problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every missing-taskbar case. If the taskbar remains absent after restart, move on rather than repeating the same step.

4. Check for Windows updates
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Restart if Windows asks you to. Microsoft includes checking for updates among its File Explorer troubleshooting steps; that does not establish that a particular update caused your taskbar problem or that updating will always resolve it. 5. Check Windows system files if the problem persists
If the taskbar is still missing after the visibility checks, restart, and updates, damaged or missing Windows system files are one area Microsoft recommends checking when troubleshooting File Explorer. Follow Microsoft’s current System File Checker procedure linked from its File Explorer troubleshooting guide for the appropriate commands and sequence.

This is a later troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try for a taskbar that may simply be hidden. Do not jump straight to resetting Windows or using recovery tools for a basic visibility problem.
Windows 11 tablet behavior is automatic
If you use a touchscreen or a 2-in-1 device, do not look for a Windows 10-style tablet-mode toggle as a taskbar fix. Microsoft says Windows 11 has no option to turn tablet mode on or off manually; on supported devices, behavior changes automatically as the keyboard is detached or attached or the device changes form. If none of these checks brings the taskbar back
Microsoft’s guidance supports these checks but does not identify one universal cause or guaranteed repair for a missing taskbar. Note your Windows version and build, when the issue began, and any recent changes, then continue through Microsoft’s official support options. Avoid assuming that an update, display setting, or particular app is responsible without evidence.
