People may stop wearing an Apple Watch because charging becomes a chore, its features no longer feel useful, it is uncomfortable, or its connection to the iPhone feels unnecessary or distracting. These are plausible reasons, not a measured ranking: the sources available do not establish a current, representative rate of Apple Watch abandonment or show which reason is most common.
1. Charging becomes another daily task
Regular charging can be a drawback, particularly for someone who wants to wear a watch overnight. Battery life depends on how the watch is used and its battery age, among other factors, so one wearer’s experience may not match another’s. Apple explains those variables in its battery guidance.

Apple’s Series 12 battery test covered 24 hours of use that included 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use, a 60-minute workout with music, and six hours of sleep tracking. Apple says results vary with use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors. This is a manufacturer test for Series 12, not a guarantee for every owner or Apple Watch model. Low Power Mode can stretch battery life, but it changes the experience: Apple says it turns off or limits features including Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. Some other notifications may be delayed, and network connections may be limited. Two surveys offer context, but neither measures current Apple Watch abandonment. In a 2015 survey by 451 Research/ChangeWave, 37% of 145 Apple Watch owners surveyed from July 27 to August 4 said battery life was too short. In a separate 2026 Brox Insights panel, 14.5% selected charging as the main reason they might stop wearing a smartwatch or fitness tracker. That panel comprised 200 U.S. digital twins based on long-form interviews and asked a hypothetical question; it did not survey former Apple Watch users. 2. The novelty fades, or the watch stops feeling useful
Once the initial excitement passes, a wearer may find that the watch is not earning a place in their daily routine. Apple markets the device for health, fitness, communications, and safety, with features such as activity and workout tracking, calls and texts, and supported cellular use away from an iPhone. Which of those functions matter is personal: if a phone already handles the tasks someone cares about, the watch may feel redundant; someone who relies on its activity, health, or safety features may reach a different conclusion. In the 2026 Brox Insights hypothetical panel, 50% named novelty wearing off as the main possible reason they might stop wearing a smartwatch or fitness tracker. These were predicted responses from a category-wide panel—not observed reasons given by people who quit, and not an Apple Watch-specific estimate. An academic paper about barriers to integrating wearable health trackers into daily routines provides adjacent background, but it does not establish an Apple Watch abandonment rate. The paper’s abstract discusses that broader routine-integration problem.

3. The fit or feel is not comfortable enough
Comfort depends on the person, band, case, activity, and whether they wear the watch while sleeping. A device that irritates the wrist or feels intrusive can make taking it off seem easier than keeping it on. That experience can be enough to outweigh features the wearer rarely uses.

The available numerical evidence is indirect: 14.5% of Brox Insights’ 200-person hypothetical panel chose discomfort as a possible main reason to stop wearing a smartwatch or fitness tracker. It is not a share of Apple Watch owners who quit because of comfort, nor a record of actual abandonment.
4. The phone connection feels unnecessary or distracting
Calls, texts, apps, and supported cellular connectivity are part of the Apple Watch’s appeal, but constant access may not suit everyone. A wearer may prefer to check a phone deliberately rather than receive alerts on the wrist, or may see little benefit in a watch that depends on a nearby iPhone for the functions they use. That is an individual preference, not an established leading cause of Apple Watch abandonment.

A 2015 451 Research/ChangeWave survey found that 31% of its 145 Apple Watch owner respondents disliked reliance on the iPhone. It measured a dated owner dislike, not the share who later stopped wearing the watch. No current, representative survey in the sources establishes a definitive ranking of these four reasons.
How to decide whether to keep wearing one
Before giving up a wearable—or choosing a replacement—consider how it fits your actual routine rather than its feature list.
