Perovskite Solar Cells: What They Are and How They Work

Perovskite solar cells use a thin absorber made from a material family defined by its crystal structure. Learn how they work, what tandem designs do, and why lab efficiency does not yet establish long-term commercial performance.

A perovskite solar cell is a photovoltaic device that uses a light-absorbing material with a perovskite-type crystal structure. “Perovskite” describes a structure and a family of materials—not one element. In the cell, a thin perovskite absorber converts light into electrical charges, and neighboring layers guide those charges to contacts that collect current.

What “perovskite” means

The term refers to a crystal structure shared by a broad family of materials. Many solar-cell absorbers in this family are metal-halide perovskites, often described by the simplified formula ABX3: A is an organic or inorganic cation, B is typically a metal cation, and X is usually a halide such as iodide or bromide. Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) is one familiar example, but it is only one possible composition. The formula is a useful shorthand, not a claim that all perovskite absorbers are chemically identical. NREL’s solar-module efficiency guide and the U.S. Department of Energy’s perovskite overview describe the material family and its photovoltaic use.

How a perovskite solar cell works

Sunlight absorbed by the perovskite layer excites charge carriers. Functional layers on either side help direct electrons and positive charges in opposite directions; electrical contacts then collect them, producing current. This is the same broad photovoltaic principle used in other solar cells, though the materials and device construction differ. For general background on photovoltaic conversion, see the DOE’s explanation of solar photovoltaic cell basics.

The active absorber is a thin film, so perovskite photovoltaics are a type of thin-film solar technology. A typical device has a substrate or base, the absorber, charge-selective or transport layers, and electrical contacts. Exact layer order and architecture vary.

How the cells are made

One approach starts with precursor salts mixed into an ink or deposited as vapor. A thin perovskite film is formed on a base, then additional functional layers and contacts are added. To make a module, individual sections can be scribed and wired together; encapsulant and edge sealant help protect the device from the environment. Manufacturing approaches are still being developed, so this is a general description rather than a single fixed production recipe. The DOE overview describes these processes and notes that methods vary.

Why researchers are interested in perovskites

  • Strong light absorption: Perovskites can absorb selected parts of the solar spectrum in a thin layer.
  • Potentially different manufacturing routes: Thin films may be processed at lower temperatures and could require less capital-intensive manufacturing. These are potential advantages, not proof that commercial perovskite modules are cheaper.
  • Tandem designs: A perovskite layer can be combined with silicon, allowing the two absorbers to capture different portions of sunlight. This can raise the amount of the spectrum a device uses.

NREL senior scientist Kai Zhu summarized the central trade-off in NREL’s report on tandem solar cells: “You ought to have high efficiency and high stability simultaneously. That’s challenging.” NREL’s report discusses the path forward for tandem devices.

What efficiency figures do—and do not—show

Efficiency figures need context: a small research cell is not the same thing as a commercial module, and a record measurement does not establish long-term outdoor performance. The DOE’s overview, accessed in 2026, reports research-device results above 26% for small-area single-junction perovskite cells and nearly 34% for perovskite-silicon tandems. It also describes progress from about 3% efficiency in 2009 to above 26% in research devices. These figures track laboratory development, not a direct comparison with commercial silicon modules. A separate DOE research-directions page gives a dated record snapshot: 26.1% for a single-junction perovskite cell and 33.9% for a perovskite-silicon tandem, as of April 21, 2024. Those are historical values, not necessarily the current records. That page also reports that outdoor fielded minimodules of roughly 25 cm2 had aperture-area efficiencies of 15–18% and had not fallen to 80% of their initial efficiency after five months outside, as of April 22, 2024. This limited observation does not establish a multi-decade service life or warranty. DOE’s perovskite research-directions page

When comparing performance, check whether the figure is for a cell or module, the device area and architecture, the measurement date and verification, and the length and conditions of outdoor operation. A small-area champion-cell result should not be presented as if it were a commercial module result.

What still limits commercial use

Perovskite devices can degrade when exposed to moisture, oxygen, light, heat, applied voltage, or combinations of these stresses. Maintaining high efficiency while producing large-area modules that are durable, reproducible, and financially bankable remains difficult. The DOE says perovskite photovoltaics are not currently commercially produced, primarily because operational lifetime remains limited; availability may change as the technology develops. DOE’s research-directions page and NREL’s perovskite solar-cell overview describe these challenges.

Perovskite cells in brief

  • “Perovskite” names a crystal structure and material family, not a single element.
  • The absorber in many devices is a metal-halide perovskite, with multiple possible compositions.
  • Light absorbed in the thin film creates charges that adjacent layers direct toward electrical contacts.
  • In a tandem cell, perovskite and silicon absorbers can capture different parts of sunlight.
  • High research-cell efficiency does not by itself prove commercial scale, long outdoor life, or product availability.
