Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Task Manager opens in Windows 11 but shows no processes, first check whether the problem is limited to that window or affects the desktop too. Close and reopen Task Manager, then restart Windows and check for updates. A blank window by itself does not identify a cause or guarantee that any one fix will work.
Check what is actually blank
Note whether the entire Task Manager window is blank, whether its menus and navigation are visible but the Processes list is empty, or whether the desktop itself is blank or flickering. Also consider whether the issue began after a Windows update, graphics-driver change, or newly installed app. These details can guide troubleshooting, but they do not prove a cause.

Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance associates a Windows blank screen with a cursor with possibilities such as a stalled Windows process or a driver issue. That guidance is about a blank Windows screen; it does not establish that a blank Task Manager is caused by Windows Explorer or a driver.
Try low-disruption steps first
- Close and reopen Task Manager. Check whether its Processes list appears after a fresh launch.
- Restart the PC. A restart is a general troubleshooting check, not a confirmed Task Manager-specific fix.
- Check Windows Update for available updates. Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting in its guidance for File Explorer problems; these are general checks rather than a diagnosis of a blank Task Manager. See Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting steps.
Restart Windows Explorer only if the desktop shell is stuck
If the taskbar or desktop is also unresponsive, restarting Windows Explorer may be relevant. Microsoft’s blank-screen instructions say to open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. If Windows Explorer is not listed, use File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and run it. This is a shell-recovery step for a stuck desktop, not a universal repair for an isolated empty Processes list.

Use flicker clues only when the screen is flickering
If the whole display is flickering or scrambled, compare it with Task Manager. Microsoft says that if Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen, a display driver is probably involved; if Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the display does, an incompatible app is a likely explanation. That test does not diagnose a static, empty process list. Microsoft also says the graphics driver reset shortcut Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B may help in some cases. See Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance.
Repair Windows system files if other symptoms point to a wider problem
For broader Windows problems that make damaged system files plausible, Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish. Microsoft explains that DISM can supply files needed for repair, while SFC scans protected system files and may replace corrupted files with cached copies. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupt files, or could not repair some files. These tools address system-file problems; Microsoft does not identify corruption as the usual cause of a blank Task Manager. Details are in Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.

If the problem continues, a clean boot can help determine whether a startup app or service is involved. If Task Manager behaves normally in that environment, enable startup items systematically to narrow down the conflict. A clean boot can temporarily limit some device functionality, and Microsoft cautions that network-managed PCs may have policy restrictions. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.

For more extensive recovery, start with the least disruptive option and back up important files before any step that could affect them. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss. Resetting Windows or reinstalling it is not a sensible first response to an isolated Task Manager display problem. Review Microsoft’s recovery options before proceeding.
