Yes. GitHub Copilot usage metrics include dedicated fields for activity in the VS Code Agents window. To report that activity accurately, use those fields—not the separate metrics for Copilot agent mode in the IDE. For detailed traces of agent interactions and tool use, VS Code offers a separate OpenTelemetry export path.
Which Copilot metrics track the VS Code Agents window?
GitHub documents a dedicated set of VS Code Agents-window fields in enterprise, organization, and per-user usage reports. The fields depend on report scope and shape:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
used_vscode_agentindicates whether an individual used the VS Code Agents window during the reporting period.totals_by_vscode_agent.session_countandtotals_by_vscode_agent.total_user_messagesreport session and user-message totals when the object is present.daily_active_vscode_agent_userscounts active users for the report day.weekly_active_vscode_agent_userscounts users from Sunday through the report day.monthly_active_vscode_agent_userscounts users from the first day of the calendar month through the report day.
The weekly and monthly counts are calendar-to-date measures, not trailing seven- or 28-day windows. GitHub documents these fields in one-day and 28-day report types. See GitHub’s usage-metrics field reference for the report definitions.

GitHub provides Copilot usage metrics through enterprise and organization dashboards, API reports, and export. The API offers aggregate, repository-level, and individual-user report granularities; available fields vary by report shape. Use the scope and endpoint that match the organization or enterprise you need to measure, and check the corresponding API instructions for authorization details.

Keep Agents-window activity separate from IDE agent mode
The dedicated Agents window is not the same metric category as Copilot agent mode within the IDE. GitHub uses fields such as used_agent and monthly_active_agent_users for agent mode. Use used_vscode_agent and totals_by_vscode_agent for activity in the dedicated VS Code Agents window.
Agents-window activity is excluded from generic top-level activity totals and feature breakdowns such as totals_by_feature, totals_by_model_feature, and totals_by_ai_adoption_phase. Don’t add those counts to generic totals unless the metric definitions make the measures comparable; doing so can double-count activity or produce a misleading total.

Why might an Agents-window field be missing?
An absent field is not always a zero. GitHub says daily and per-user Agents-window fields may be omitted when qualifying data is unavailable. The aggregate totals_by_vscode_agent object appears only when both nested counts are available. If an interval has qualifying activity in one window but none in another, the inactive interval may be zero; if neither the weekly nor monthly interval has qualifying activity, both fields may be omitted.
Copilot metrics combine client and server telemetry to identify active users. Client telemetry is needed for richer IDE dimensions and code-generation details, so a user identified through server-side signals may not have those details. GitHub also reports CLI metrics separately from IDE telemetry; CLI activity does not contribute to IDE-based active-user counts. Third-party agent-app job starts use a different measure from explicit prompt counts, so those figures should not be reconciled as if they count the same event. See GitHub’s metric reconciliation guidance.

When should you use OpenTelemetry instead?
Use GitHub’s usage metrics when the goal is organization- or enterprise-level adoption and usage reporting. Choose VS Code’s OpenTelemetry export when you need detailed operational observability, such as traces of agent interactions, tool executions, LLM calls, or token signals. VS Code can export traces, metrics, and events to a compatible backend; the resulting telemetry is a separate signal stream, not a substitute for GitHub’s canonical adoption reports.

OpenTelemetry signals can include standard gen_ai.* and Copilot-specific github.copilot.* attributes, along with extension-specific measures such as tool-call counts and durations, agent invocation duration, and agent-turn counts. Setup requires configuring telemetry export and a compatible backend or collector. Follow the current VS Code guide to monitoring agent usage with OpenTelemetry.

What to check if the fields still do not appear
- Confirm that you are viewing an enterprise, organization, or user report type documented to include the dedicated Agents-window fields.
- Check that your account has the required metrics permission for the report’s scope.
- Inspect the exact field definitions and omission behavior for the report shape you requested; do not convert every missing field into zero.
- For missing IDE detail, check telemetry coverage and consult GitHub’s reconciliation guidance. Version requirements listed for other feature signals, such as chat-panel or agent-edit metrics, are feature-specific and should not be assumed to apply to every Agents-window field. GitHub’s Lines of Code metrics reference lists minimum versions for the signals it covers.
GitHub’s documentation does not clearly assign a release stage to the dedicated Agents-window fields. Do not infer that status from agent-app metrics elsewhere in the reference, which have their own release notes.
