Instead of answering a request with only a block of text, a generative user interface can create a task-specific screen, tool, simulation, or workflow that people can interact with. That change could make software more responsive to what someone is trying to do—but current prototypes and studies do not show that generated interfaces are always better than conventional ones.
What is generative UI?
Generative UI, also called a generative interface, is an approach in which an AI system creates or adapts interface elements in response to a person’s goal. The result might be a visual comparison, an interactive lesson, a planning workspace, or a simulation—not just text displayed in a fixed chat window.

The key change is the form of the response. A conventional chatbot primarily returns language; a generative interface can arrange information into controls and steps that help someone explore or complete a task. It does not make fixed screens obsolete, and it does not mean that every app or task should be generated on demand.
How does generative UI work?
From a request to an interactive response
One research architecture, described by Jiaqi Chen, Yanzhe Zhang, Yutong Zhang, Yijia Shao, and Diyi Yang in the 2025 preprint Generative Interfaces for Language Models, separates the process into stages. The system interprets a query as an interaction plan, translates that plan into interface code, then evaluates and refines candidate results against criteria relevant to the request. The paper describes an intermediate representation for interaction flows and component behavior; this is a proposed architecture, not an industry-wide standard.

Google Research describes a different implementation for its generative UI experiments. It uses Gemini 3 Pro with tool access such as web search and image generation, detailed instructions for planning and technical requirements, and post-processing intended to address common output problems. The result can be rendered in a browser. Google says the system can use a configured visual style or select one automatically, and that a user may influence the result through prompts.
Generated experiences and AI-assisted design are different
An end-user generative interface creates an experience for the person making a request. Google describes Dynamic View and Search AI Mode as experiments in this category: examples include an interactive probability lesson, event planning, fashion advice, a Van Gogh gallery, and visual experiences or simulations in response to a Search question.
Google Stitch addresses a different task: helping a practitioner make software. It generates interface designs and frontend code from prompt and image inputs. It is relevant to how AI may change design work, but it is not the same as a generated interface responding to an end user. Product availability and behavior can change, so these examples should be understood as experiments described by Google, not as a guarantee that a particular feature is available to every user or region.

What evidence supports generative interfaces?
Early results are encouraging in specific settings, but they measure different things and come from different prototypes and study designs. Preference, usability scores, participant reports, and accessibility checks are not interchangeable measures of success.
| Study or evaluation | Scope | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Google Research, adaptive generative banking prototype, 2026 | Repeated-measures comparison with 72 participants | The generative prototype received 84.38 SUS points versus 53.96 for the deterministic baseline; mean difference 30.42 points, p < 0.0001, Cohen’s d = 1.04. |
| Chen and colleagues, Generative Interfaces for Language Models, 2025 preprint | Human evaluation across the authors’ study tasks | More than 70% of cases favored generative interfaces over conversational interfaces. |
| Petridis, Terry, and Cai, PromptInfuser, ACM DIS 2024 | 14 professional designers used a Figma widget connecting UI elements to LLM prompts and outputs | Participants reported that it helped communicate concepts and anticipate interface issues and constraints. |
| Chen, Knearem, and Li, The GenUI Study, ACM DIS 2025 | 37 UX-related professionals completed a week-long individual mini-project | The study identified opportunities and gaps in current GenUI tools. |
| DIS 2025 publication summary on generated-interface accessibility | Evaluation of 90 AI-generated interfaces across three application domains | The summary reports basic accessibility compliance alongside homogenized patterns that could underserve specialized needs. |
The banking result applies to the study’s adaptive prototype and comparison; it does not establish that generative interfaces generally outperform fixed software. Likewise, the preprint’s preference finding is a result across its tasks, not a measure of broad consumer preference. The accessibility summary is a warning about the limits of basic compliance, not proof that every generated interface is inaccessible.
Google’s generative UI article also reports that generations can take a minute or more and may contain inaccuracies. In its comparison, expert-made sites ranked first and generated interfaces followed closely; the comparison did not account for generation speed. A visually tailored response may therefore cost time, and visual polish cannot by itself establish reliability.

How could generative UI change human-computer interaction?
Interfaces may start with the task rather than the feature list
A fixed application asks people to find the right screen or feature. A generated view could instead organize the steps and information around the immediate task: a simulation for exploring a concept, a structured workspace for planning, or a visual comparison for evaluating alternatives. Google’s 2026 banking study frames this possibility as reducing “navigation tax,” but that interpretation comes from one prototype study, not evidence that generated interfaces reduce effort in every application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDesign work may focus more on rules and evaluation
If software can produce different screens for different situations, design teams may spend more effort defining reusable components, constraints, interaction rules, and criteria for judging the output rather than drawing every screen independently. That is a forward-looking possibility, not a settled account of how the profession will change. In the 2025 GenUI practitioner study, tool integration and user needs remained unresolved; in PromptInfuser, designers described a back-and-forth in which the prompt and interface informed each other.
This makes interaction design consequential beyond visual styling. In HCI for AGI, published by Google DeepMind on February 27, 2025, Meredith Ringel Morris argues that HCI has a role in ensuring AI is useful and usable for tasks people value, including through interaction techniques, interface design, evaluation, benchmarks, and harm mitigation.

Is generative UI better than a chatbot?
Neither format is inherently better. A chatbot may be the clearer choice when a person needs a short explanation or wants to ask follow-up questions. A generated interface may help when the task benefits from manipulating variables, comparing options, following a sequence, or seeing a concept spatially. Even then, the generated format is useful only if it makes the task easier to understand and complete.
For a real implementation, evaluate it against the actual task rather than judging it by novelty or appearance. Useful comparison questions include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Task fit: Does the interface organize the information and steps the task genuinely requires?
- Task completion and recovery: Can people reach the goal, recognize errors, and recover from them?
- User agency: Can a person correct the system’s interpretation, refine the interface, and control consequential actions?
- Accessibility and individual fit: Does it work for people with different abilities, preferences, and contexts, beyond passing baseline checks?
- Reliability: Are the facts and interactions accurate, and are uncertainties or limitations visible?
- Latency and predictability: How long does generation take, and is the experience stable enough for repeated use?
- Evaluation quality: Were realistic tasks and representative users involved, and do the measures assess more than preference or visual appeal?
These are practical evaluation questions drawn from concerns raised across the cited studies, not a published universal standard.

What can go wrong—and what should users be able to control?
Latency and inaccurate output
When generation takes a minute or more, a custom interface may be a poor fit for a task that needs an immediate, predictable response. Inaccurate content or broken interactions can also turn a polished screen into a misleading one. Systems need ways to expose uncertainty, check important information, and let people recover instead of treating a generated result as automatically correct.
Accessibility that stops at the baseline
The DIS 2025 summary found basic accessibility compliance across the interfaces it evaluated, while also noting homogenized design patterns that could miss specialized needs. A checklist can catch some barriers, but it cannot establish that an interface suits every person, assistive technology, or context. Accessibility needs to be considered in the task, interaction, and individual fit—not inferred from a generic pass.
Shared control instead of prompt perfection
A person should not have to guess the exact wording that will produce a usable interface. In their 2024 ACM Interactions article, Tanya Kraljic and Michal Lahav argue for iterative mutual understanding between people and AI. In practical terms, users need to inspect what the system inferred, adjust or reject its structure, and retain control over consequential actions. A single prompt should be treated as a starting point, not a finished specification.
The promise of generative UI is a larger design space: software may be able to shape an interaction around a person’s immediate goal. Whether that improves the experience depends on more than the generated screen. Speed, accuracy, accessibility, task success, and meaningful user control all need to hold up in the situations where the interface is used.
