To qualify for Windows 11, a PC must meet every minimum requirement, including a compatible processor, TPM 2.0, and UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable. A fast CPU alone is not enough. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to see whether a specific computer qualifies and, if it does not, which requirement failed.
What are the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11?
Microsoft’s published minimum specifications, checked on October 4, 2026, are:

| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit CPU or system on a chip (SoC), 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger storage device |
| Firmware and security | UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable; TPM version 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 or later compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver |
| Display | High-definition display greater than 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel |
These are minimum eligibility specifications, not a performance rating or a recommendation for comfortable use. Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Some Windows 11 features have additional requirements. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and requirements.
Why processor compatibility is more than clock speed
The CPU must meet the basic speed and core-count figures and be included among Microsoft’s compatible processors. A processor can run at more than 1 GHz and have two or more cores yet still be unsupported. Microsoft’s processor compatibility reference is model-specific and can change; Microsoft directs people checking an individual PC to PC Health Check or the computer’s manufacturer rather than treating a generation or speed rule as decisive. See Microsoft’s supported processor information and its Windows 11 requirements.

What TPM 2.0 means and how to check it
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security component used by Windows. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. Some computers have a compatible TPM but leave it disabled in firmware, so a missing or unavailable TPM report does not by itself prove that the hardware is absent.
- Open Windows Security and select Device security.
- Open Security processor details and check the specification version. It must say 2.0.
- If the security processor is unavailable, disabled, or unclear, consult the computer manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model before changing firmware settings.
A TPM version below 2.0 does not meet the requirement. Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 guidance explains how to check and points users to manufacturer-specific help.

What Secure Boot capable means
The Windows 11 minimum is UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable. Capability is not the same thing as having Secure Boot turned on: a PC may support it while firmware settings make the option appear unavailable. Secure Boot helps prevent malicious software from loading as Windows starts.

How to find out whether a specific PC qualifies
- On a personal PC that is not managed by an organization, install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and select Check now.
- Read the result and the reason shown if the device is not eligible. It may identify a specific hardware requirement or point to a possible action.
- After a firmware setting or hardware change, run the check again. Do not assume the change fixed eligibility without a new result.
- You can also check upgrade eligibility in Windows Update. If your PC is managed by an employer or school, ask its IT administrator about the applicable check and upgrade process.
A temporary compatibility hold is different from failing a hardware minimum. Microsoft may delay an upgrade if a known issue, such as one involving a critical app or driver, could disrupt the experience. The PC Health Check instructions describe this kind of temporary delay in how to use PC Health Check.
Which failed requirements can be fixed?
The right next step depends on the specific failure and the computer’s design. Microsoft says RAM or storage below the minimum may sometimes be upgradeable, depending on the model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and supported parts before buying anything. The processor’s clock speed and core count are inherent to its design, so they are not upgradeable components.

| Failure reported | What to check | What may resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| TPM unavailable or disabled | Whether the exact PC supports TPM 2.0 and whether it is disabled in firmware | Enable the supported setting using the manufacturer’s instructions; absent or older TPM hardware will not satisfy the requirement |
| Secure Boot or UEFI issue | Whether the PC supports UEFI and Secure Boot, and how its current boot mode is configured | Follow model-specific manufacturer instructions; a setting change can affect boot configuration |
| RAM or storage below minimum | Whether the specific model allows an upgrade and which parts it supports | Upgrade only if the computer supports the needed part |
| Unsupported processor | The exact CPU model and PC Health Check result | RAM or storage upgrades will not make an unsupported CPU compatible; consider a supported replacement PC |
| Graphics or display requirement | The device’s specifications and the precise result from the eligibility check | Whether a fix is possible depends on the particular device; verify support with its manufacturer |
If the CPU is unsupported, or the required security capability is missing and cannot be added or enabled on that PC, upgrading RAM or storage will not make it eligible. Microsoft lists a new device that meets the requirements as an option. Compare that route with component upgrades only after confirming the exact PC’s serviceability and the reason for failure; a purchase-free first step is PC Health Check.
