Start with the image’s source and disclosure, then check any available creation or edit history. Treat visual clues and detector results as evidence to investigate—not as proof that an image is genuine or fake.
Start with the source, not the skin
Find the original post or file if possible. Read the caption and surrounding context for an edit or AI disclosure, and check whether the image has been cropped, screenshotted, or reposted. Reposts and conversions may remove or disrupt information about an image’s history.

Context can help establish what a picture claims to show, but a smooth complexion, symmetry, unusual detail, or highly polished look does not by itself establish that AI or a beauty filter was used. NIST’s overview of synthetic-content transparency describes several approaches—including provenance, labeling, and detection—rather than a single visual test. NIST’s report, published November 20, 2024 and updated April 8, 2026, does not provide a validated checklist for identifying beauty filters by sight.

Check the available edit history
Google Photos: “How this was made”
In the Google Photos app for Android or iOS, open a supported photo or video and view its About panel. The “How this was made” section may summarize how the media was composed, its edit history, and whether AI was used. Availability depends on compatible Content Credentials; not every file has them, and this feature is not available on Google Photos Web. Read any label narrowly. “Edited with AI tools” indicates recorded AI-tool use; “May have been edited by AI tools” signals uncertainty; “Edited with non-AI tools” indicates recorded non-AI editing. None, on its own, means that the whole image is fabricated or that the scene is false. Content Credentials
Content Credentials are records that can describe an image’s origin, tools, or edits when a compatible capture or editing workflow creates and preserves them. C2PA uses cryptographic binding to help check whether a credential remains associated with an asset and whether its record has been tampered with. The system is opt-in, so a missing credential does not mean an image is authentic or unedited. A valid credential also does not certify that the depicted event happened or that every assertion in the record is true. Read the C2PA Content Credentials explainer, specification 2.2.

Use AI detectors only within their stated scope
OpenAI’s verification tool
OpenAI’s verification tool is designed to check for supported signals associated with content generated using ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, or Codex, including supported C2PA metadata or SynthID signals. A detected signal can be useful evidence about likely origin within that scope; it does not establish whether the image is accurately captioned or how it was changed afterward.
If the tool finds no supported signal, that means only that it did not find one. The image might have been made with another provider, or a signal may be absent because metadata was stripped, a watermark degraded, or the file was altered. For the most reliable check, OpenAI advises using the best available copy rather than cropping it or converting it to another format such as PDF.

Google’s SynthID checks
Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement described SynthID verification in Gemini for images, video, and audio, along with a rollout of verification features to Search and Chrome. The announcement said C2PA checks in Gemini were rolling out, with Search and Chrome support planned for the coming months. Because availability was described as a staged rollout, check the current product interface; do not assume a feature is available to every account or region. Google also reported that SynthID had watermarked over 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio, and that Gemini’s SynthID verification had been used 50 million times globally. These are company-reported scale and usage figures, not measures of detector accuracy or of how common beauty filters are.

Weigh evidence without overclaiming

When evidence conflicts or is incomplete, ask four questions:

- Coverage: Does the check cover this creator, platform, model, or credential format?
- Persistence: Could the signal have been removed or degraded? C2PA metadata can be removed; SynthID is designed to withstand some transformations, but absence of either signal is not proof of authenticity.
- Record type: Is this a documented creation or edit history, a provider-specific watermark, a platform label, or only a visual impression?
- Claim: Does the evidence indicate origin or editing, or is someone using it to claim the scene is factually accurate? These provenance checks do not establish whether the scene is true.
For higher-stakes claims, seek independent corroboration of what the image is said to depict. A provenance record can help explain a file’s history, but it is not a substitute for verifying the event.
