How to Install Windows 11 on an Unsupported PC—and What to Consider First

First find out why the PC is marked unsupported: some blockers, such as disabled TPM 2.0 or insufficient RAM, may have a supported remedy. If the hardware still misses Windows 11’s minimum requirements, Microsoft advises against installing it. Microsoft does not validate a current bypass method in its installation guidance, and getting past a setup check would not make the PC supported or guarantee updates.

Check why the PC is ineligible

Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and use its Windows 11 compatibility check. It reports whether the computer qualifies and identifies the reasons if it does not. That distinction matters: a settings issue may be fixable, while a processor or platform that falls below the requirements may not be.

See whether there is a supported fix

Before trying to install Windows 11 anyway, check the specific computer model with its manufacturer. Microsoft gives adding RAM and updating the BIOS to enable TPM 2.0 as examples of possible remedies, not universal solutions. Confirm component compatibility and any manufacturer guidance before buying hardware or changing firmware; a RAM upgrade or TPM setting will not necessarily resolve a CPU or platform eligibility failure.

If the PC qualifies, use an official installation method

Microsoft recommends waiting for the Windows 11 upgrade offer in Windows Update. If the PC is eligible and you want to proceed another way, Microsoft documents the Installation Assistant and installation media as alternatives. See Microsoft’s installation options and its Windows 11 download page.

Upgrade from the Windows installation already running

Running setup from within Windows can let you keep files and apps, depending on the option you select. Read the setup choices carefully and back up important files before starting.

Create and use installation media

Microsoft’s media-creation instructions require a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space; creating the media erases the USB drive. Have a separate backup of important files and check the PC manufacturer’s site for drivers you may need.

There is an important difference between starting setup from Windows and booting from the USB drive. Booting from installation media for a fresh install wipes the target drive, including its existing Windows installation and installed apps. Microsoft describes this as a method that “completely wipes the contents of the hard drive” before installing Windows 11. Do not use it unless you intend to erase that drive and have backed up what you need.

What an unsupported installation means

Microsoft says installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility problems. The device will not be supported by Microsoft and is not entitled to, or guaranteed, updates—including security updates. Microsoft also warns that damage caused by incompatibility is not covered by the manufacturer warranty. Bypassing a setup check does not change those terms. Read Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance before deciding.

Microsoft’s official installation pages explain supported methods and these risks; they do not endorse a current workaround for bypassing requirements. Community instructions should not be treated as a Microsoft-supported procedure or as proof that a method will work reliably on a particular current build.

Compare the practical alternatives

Option Support and compatibility Cost and data considerations
Fix an identified eligibility blocker May bring the PC into compliance if the manufacturer confirms the remedy; not every blocker can be fixed. Could mean a firmware change or compatible hardware such as RAM. Confirm the exact model and cost first.
Use a supported PC A PC that meets Windows 11 requirements avoids the unsupported-device warning. May require replacing the computer. Microsoft advises consulting the device partner if the PC cannot be upgraded.
Install on hardware that remains unsupported Microsoft does not recommend it; support and updates are not guaranteed, and compatibility issues may occur. A setup bypass does not remove those risks. Installation choices also carry different data-erasure risks.

Plan for rollback before upgrading

If a Windows 11 upgrade causes problems, Microsoft says the Go back option is available for 10 days after the upgrade. After that, the files required for rollback are removed. Treat the window as a short recovery period, not a permanent way to return to Windows 10; keep a separate backup of important files.
