On your PC, search Control Panel for that exact applet and use Create a system image only if the option appears. Before relying on it, keep a separate copy of important files and prepare a way to reach Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), where System Image Recovery can restore a computer from an image.
What a system image does—and what it does not do
A system image is intended to let you restore a computer using an image backup. Microsoft documents the recovery side of this process: Windows Recovery Environment includes System Image Recovery. Its current support guidance does not provide a step-by-step workflow for creating an image in Windows 11, so the legacy Control Panel route should be treated as an option to check on your own build, not a guaranteed feature. Microsoft’s backup and restore overview describes recovery options and other backup approaches.

An image is not the same as a regular copy of personal files. Full-system recovery is a different use case from retrieving a document or photo, so keep a separate file backup you can access without restoring the whole PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to check for the legacy image-creation option
- Open Control Panel and search for Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
- If that applet is available, open it and look for Create a system image.
- Continue only if the option is present and you understand the destination choices shown on your PC. The exact options and behavior are not established as consistent across Windows 11 builds.
- After creating an image, keep the backup drive safely stored when it is not in use, and maintain a separate backup of your important files.
This is a conditional route, not a claim that every Windows 11 installation offers the same wizard. Microsoft’s current material confirms recovery from a system image but does not specify the current creation steps, destination support, image retention behavior, or universal storage requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
How to restore from an image if Windows will not start
System Image Recovery is available through Windows RE. Microsoft’s guidance describes recovery options and notes that some tools may require a BitLocker recovery key on an encrypted device. Find and keep that key available before you need recovery. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance explains how Windows RE fits into recovery.
Prepare a route into Windows RE or recovery media while the PC is working. If Windows will not start, the recovery choices available can depend on how you reach the recovery environment and the condition of the device; do not assume an image can be repaired if the backup itself is damaged or restored successfully to different hardware.

Choose the right backup or recovery tool
| Option | What it preserves or does | How it is used | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| System image | Intended to restore the computer using a system image backup. | Use System Image Recovery in Windows RE. | Microsoft’s reviewed guidance confirms recovery, but does not give current, universal creation instructions. |
| Windows Backup | Can back up selected Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders to OneDrive and sync certain settings, app information, and preferences through a Microsoft account. | Restore those backed-up items and synced information. | It is not the same as restoring a system image. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance explains the included folders and settings. |
| Recovery Drive | USB recovery media to help restore Windows, including in a bare-metal recovery scenario. | Boot or recover using the prepared USB drive. | It does not include personal files, so it is not a file backup or a system image. Creating one erases the selected USB drive. Microsoft’s Recovery Drive guidance covers its purpose and creation. |
| System Protection / restore points | Returns system configuration and related state to a restore point. | Use as a troubleshooting feature in Windows. | It is not a full system image backup. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance describes restore points. |
Prepare storage and recovery media
Pick storage based on your data
Microsoft identifies an external hard drive or network drive as useful for backups when internet access is unavailable or files are large. The sources do not provide a universal capacity recommendation for a Windows 11 system image; the space needed depends on your PC and the data being protected. Microsoft’s backup guidance discusses external and network storage options.

Keep files and recovery tools separate
- Back up important files separately so you can retrieve them without performing a full-system recovery.
- Prepare recovery media before a failure. A USB drive for Windows installation media must be at least 8 GB under Microsoft’s current instructions; that is an installation-media requirement, not a recommended system-image capacity. The process erases the selected USB drive. Microsoft’s Windows installation media instructions give the USB requirement.
- Label recovery and backup drives clearly, and disconnect removable backup storage when you are not writing to or restoring from it.
- For an encrypted PC, locate the BitLocker recovery key before depending on recovery tools.
What to verify before trusting the image
- Confirm that the Control Panel applet and Create a system image option actually appear on your Windows 11 installation.
- Check that the destination has enough available space for the data you intend to protect; there is no universal size recommendation established here.
- Make a separate file backup and prepare a path to Windows RE or recovery media.
- Do not assume the image includes changes made after it was created, can recover a damaged image, or will restore to different hardware; those outcomes are not established by the cited Microsoft guidance.
