A useful starting point is about 30 hands-on editing hours, but that is a rough planning floor—not an industry average or a promise. It extrapolates a University of Florida IFAS guide’s general rule of at least one editing hour per finished minute of video. A film with extensive footage, story discovery, repeated revisions, or substantial sound, color, and visual-effects work can take much longer. The time an editor spends working is also different from the calendar time between receiving footage and delivering the film.
What the 30-hour estimate does—and does not—mean
The University of Florida IFAS guide says that video-editing professionals estimate at least one hour of editing for each finished minute of a video program. Applying that rule to a 30-minute film gives a rough minimum of 30 hours of editor labor. IFAS also says the time may double depending on special effects, but that caveat is not a reliable multiplier for every film. The guide concerns video programs generally, not a measured sample of 30-minute films, so its figure is best used as a starting point for planning rather than a film-industry standard: University of Florida IFAS, “Producing Your Own Video Program”.

Thirty hours means active work, not necessarily four consecutive days or a one-week turnaround. Review and approval, collaborator availability, and separate finishing tasks can stretch the elapsed schedule. The available published figures do not establish a representative calendar-time benchmark for a typical 30-minute film.

- Picture editing: organizing and reviewing footage, choosing shots, assembling a rough cut, refining it, and making revisions.
- Review and revisions: time for a director or client to watch cuts, give notes, and approve changes. The number of rounds can affect both labor and elapsed time.
- Finishing: sound editing and mixing, music, color correction, titles, credits, graphics, and visual effects. These are distinct tasks and may involve other collaborators.
Adobe’s overview describes these stages and collaborators separately. Its examples of revisions taking up to 10 weeks or more, and sound design taking up to three weeks, refer to a feature-oriented workflow; they should not be treated as forecasts for a 30-minute film. Adobe also quotes film director Jay Holben describing projects in his career as taking “from a month to a year or more,” depending on the project and work involved—not as a 30-minute-film estimate. See Adobe’s post-production guide.
Why two 30-minute films can need very different schedules
Footage volume and organization
Finished runtime does not tell you how much source footage an editor must review. A prepared project with clearly labeled, organized material is different from one that requires searching through many hours of recordings. Adobe notes that digital cameras can produce hundreds or thousands of hours of recorded material and describes editors reviewing selects and clips to find story-relevant moments. Footage volume, organization, and whether logging or sorting is included all affect the estimate.
Story complexity
A scripted film with a clear story plan may offer a defined route to a rough cut. A documentary or other story-driven project may require the editor to discover the narrative in the footage, test different structures, and revisit earlier choices as the story takes shape. That work is not captured by the finished runtime alone.

A cut may need several rounds of review. The editor’s revision time depends on the notes; calendar time also depends on when reviewers return them and whether decisions are consolidated. Ask how many review rounds are included and how additional changes will be handled.
Finishing scope
Sound mixing, Foley, music, color work, titles, graphics, and visual effects can add work beyond picture editing. Adobe’s post-production guide describes these as parts of a broader workflow, not tasks automatically included in every picture-editing estimate. Request separate scope or timing for any finishing work that matters to delivery.

Use the estimate that fits your project
Prepared, tightly scoped picture edit
If the footage is limited and organized, the story plan is clear, review rounds are few, and the quote covers picture editing only, the 30-hour rule of thumb can serve as a rough planning floor. It does not guarantee that the edit will be completed within 30 hours.
Story-driven edit or broader post-production
If the editor must discover the story from extensive or disorganized footage, or the project includes multiple revisions, complex sound or color work, or visual effects, plan for substantially more than the floor. The work may extend across weeks or months, but the available sources do not support a precise multiplier or a reliable duration for this specific 30-minute case.

To turn a rough rule into a project-specific schedule, share the information that determines the work:
- Approximate amount of source footage, its format, and how it is organized.
- Whether there is a script, outline, paper edit, or established story plan—or whether story development is part of the job.
- The expected deliverable and whether the estimate covers picture editing alone or also sound, color, titles, graphics, and VFX.
- How many review rounds are included, who consolidates feedback, and how quickly approvals are expected.
- The target delivery date and any dependencies on other collaborators or finishing stages.
Ask the editor to distinguish estimated hands-on hours from the elapsed schedule, and to identify assumptions, included revisions, and work that would be quoted separately. That makes two estimates comparable and helps avoid mistaking a 30-minute runtime for a 30-minute editing job.
When footage organization changes the workload
Adobe’s account of the documentary Eno describes editors Maya Tippett and Marley McDonald working with hundreds of hours of archival material. They organized footage into topic bins and used speech-to-text tools to review interviews. The project illustrates how much setup and review can matter when material is extensive or the storytelling structure is unusual; it does not establish a general editing-hours figure. McDonald put the importance of that early work plainly: “Setting up a project is the most critical step of editing, from the moment you start to organize the material you are editing.” Read Adobe’s account of the editors of Eno.
