Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A Windows 11 feature update is a good time to check that important settings still match your preferences—but it does not mean Windows routinely resets them. First confirm what, if anything, changed. Then review privacy permissions and update preferences, and use recovery options only if you have a specific problem.
First, confirm what actually changed
Check whether a setting differs from your preference, an app has lost access to a feature, or Windows itself is malfunctioning. If nothing is wrong, there is no need to undo the update or change settings simply because a new version was installed. Microsoft’s support guidance describes how to review settings and recover from problems; it does not establish that feature updates routinely reset user settings.

Review privacy settings and app permissions
Open Settings > Privacy & security. Review the capabilities you use—such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar—and check which apps are allowed to access them. You can manage app access individually. Microsoft’s camera-permission guidance explains the controls and notes that desktop apps may not appear in the permission lists. For those apps, look for access controls in the app’s own settings.
Use the privacy page label shown on your build
Windows 11 privacy page names can vary by version. Microsoft says the General privacy settings page is being replaced by Recommendations & offers in newer versions. Follow the label you see in Settings rather than looking for a page that may no longer exist. Depending on the version, the choices include personalized offers, allowing websites to access your language list, app launch tracking for Start and search, and suggested content in Settings. Review these as preferences; they are not settings everyone needs to disable. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 privacy settings guidance.

Check update timing and delivery preferences
Choose whether to get optional updates sooner
Go to Settings > Windows Update and review Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Microsoft says turning this on prioritizes the latest non-security and feature updates. Regular security updates continue whether the option is on or off. This setting controls update timing and priority; it is not a privacy permission. Details are in Microsoft’s update preference guidance.
Decide whether your PC shares update downloads
Delivery Optimization is separate from the “latest updates” option. Depending on its configuration, Windows can download updates and Microsoft Store apps from Microsoft and from other PCs on a local network or the internet. To review it, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization, then check the sharing preferences available on your version. You can decide whether your PC participates in this download-sharing behavior. See Microsoft’s Delivery Optimization and privacy guidance.

If a problem began after the update, choose recovery carefully
Do not use a broad reset as the first response to a setting you can simply change back. If a specific problem appeared after an update, Microsoft says, “If the problem started after a recent Windows update, uninstalling it might fix the issue.” The appropriate option depends on whether the issue followed a recent update or the upgrade to a new Windows version, and on what you can afford to remove.

Review the option shown for your system before proceeding. |
| Go back to a previous Windows version | Rolls back the Windows version after an upgrade, when the option is available. | Keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverts settings changed after it. |
| Reinstall Windows using Windows Update | Reinstalls the current Windows version to address problems. | Keeps personal files, apps, and settings. |
| System Restore | Uses a restore point to return system changes to an earlier state, if a suitable restore point is available. | Check Microsoft’s recovery guidance and the prompts on your PC for the effects applicable to your system. |
| Reset this PC | Resets Windows using the reset choice you select. | Choices can remove apps and settings or remove everything. Read the selected option carefully. |

Back up before a consequential recovery action
Before resetting or taking another recovery action that could remove content, back up important files and make sure you can access any credentials the recovery process may require. An external USB drive is one possible local backup destination, not a requirement for a routine settings review. Microsoft’s Windows backup guidance explains backup options.

Microsoft’s article “One restart a month for Windows updates,” published August 14, 2026, applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. It says that, starting with updates released on and after July 28, 2026, updates requiring a restart are grouped with the monthly security update to reduce separate restarts. This behavior is date- and version-specific; check your Windows version before relying on it.
