A familiar voice, a convincing video, and a caller ID that looks right do not prove who contacted you. If someone asks for money, personal information, a password, or another urgent action, pause and verify through a separate trusted channel before responding.
How deepfake voice and video scams work
Scammers can use a short audio clip—sometimes taken from material posted online—to make a call sound like a relative in trouble. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that a familiar-sounding voice may be cloned in family-emergency scams: FTC guidance on AI-enhanced family emergency scams.

Video can add a persuasive layer to an impersonation. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has warned about AI-generated videos portraying FBI personnel and real-time video chats with people posing as officials or executives: FBI/IC3, July 20, 2026. Its September 2026 advisory describes scammers using AI tools to appear as government or law-enforcement officials on video calls: FBI/IC3, September 2026.

The image or voice is often only one part of the scheme. A scammer may create fear, urgency, secrecy, or a sense of authority, then ask for money, login details, personal information, an account action, a link click, or a switch to another messaging app. The FBI describes suspicious links and channel changes in targeted impersonation campaigns: FBI guidance on virtual-kidnapping scams.

Warning signs to take seriously
Focus first on what the caller wants and how they respond to questions. A suspicious request is worth checking even if the voice or face seems familiar.
- They create fear or urgency and insist you act immediately.
- They tell you to keep the conversation secret or not to contact family, your bank, or law enforcement.
- They request money, passwords, identity information, or an account change you were not expecting.
- They ask for payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, prepaid card, courier, or cash. These methods do not prove fraud by themselves, but they are especially concerning alongside pressure or secrecy.
- They send a link, push you to another messaging app, or give you a number or website you are expected to trust without checking independently.
- They contact you in an unusual way or make an unusual request, even though their voice or appearance seems familiar.

Can you spot a deepfake by looking or listening?
Sometimes media has irregularities, but they are clues—not a dependable identity test. FBI guidance mentions distorted hands or feet, unnatural facial features or movement, inaccurate shadows, unusual accessories or watermarks, lag on a voice call, and inconsistencies in voice, tone, or word choice. The FBI also cautions that AI-generated material can be difficult to identify and cloned voices may sound nearly identical to a known person: FBI/IC3 media-manipulation warning and FBI virtual-kidnapping guidance.

A polished video or natural-sounding voice can still be fabricated. Caller ID can also be spoofed, so do not treat it as proof. Use any odd visual or audio detail as a reason to slow down, then verify separately rather than trying to decide authenticity from the media alone.

How to verify a caller or video request
- Pause before acting. Do not send money, disclose a password or sensitive information, click the supplied link, or move to another app while you are deciding whether the request is genuine. The FBI and American Bankers Association Foundation advise people to stop and think when someone is trying to scare or pressure them: FBI/ABA Foundation infographic.
- End the incoming contact and call back using a known number. For a family member or existing contact, use the number already saved or another number you independently know belongs to them—not a callback number supplied in the suspicious message. If they do not answer, check with another trusted relative or friend. This is the FTC’s recommended approach for a supposed family emergency: FTC guidance.
- For an organization, find its contact details yourself. Use the official website or a number obtained independently. Do not rely on the caller’s phone number, link, or supplied callback details. The FBI advises independently researching the claimed identity and finding a number to verify it: FBI guidance. IC3 similarly recommends using publicly available official details rather than information provided by the contact: FBI/IC3 advisory.
- Ask another trusted person to check the story. If the supposed caller cannot be reached, contact a relative or friend through a known channel. A second person may be able to test whether the claimed emergency makes sense without relying on the suspicious call.
- Agree on a private family codeword in advance. Choose a word or phrase that is not easy to guess, share it with trusted family members through a safe channel, and agree what to do if someone cannot provide it. - Check surprising public media independently. Look for confirmation from reputable news organizations or known official channels. Reverse image or video search may help identify reused material, but a search result is only a clue and cannot authenticate the person making a direct request. The FBI and FBI/ABA Foundation recommend independent checks: FBI/IC3 warning and FBI/ABA Foundation infographic.
Which verification method should you use?

What to do if you sent money or shared information
- Stop communicating with the suspected scammer. Do not send more money or follow new instructions.
- Contact your bank or other financial institution immediately if you transferred money or exposed an account. Ask whether the transaction can be stopped, reversed, or secured. The outcome depends on the payment and timing, so act as soon as possible.
- Preserve evidence. Keep messages, phone numbers, account names, links, transaction records, and details of what was said and when.
- Report the incident. In the United States, report to local law enforcement, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3, and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. IC3 asks complainants to include contact details, communication methods, transaction information, and details about the interaction: IC3 reporting guidance.
- Be wary of unsolicited recovery offers. Someone who promises to retrieve lost money may be targeting you in a second scam. Do not pay an unexpected “recovery agent” or share account credentials.
The FBI/IC3 reported nearly 61,000 complaints and more than $1.6 billion in losses for government or law-enforcement impersonation scams from January 2025 through July 2026. That figure covers the broader impersonation category; it is not a count or loss estimate for deepfake scams alone: FBI/IC3, September 2026. Write down a family codeword, trusted contacts, and the steps everyone should take if a loved one calls with an emergency. An optional household emergency planner can make those details easier to keep together; the useful safeguard is the agreed plan, not the organizer itself.
