Windows 11 can show two different archive commands. The older Compress to ZIP file entry is supplied by a Compressed (zipped) folder shortcut in a user’s SendTo folder. Restore that shortcut to bring the legacy command back, or delete it to remove the command for the selected user scope. Newer Windows 11 builds may instead show a Compress to submenu; changing the old shortcut does not reliably remove that newer menu.
Before changing anything, right-click a file and inspect both the compact menu and Show more options. The command’s wording and location depend on the Windows 11 build and on whether you are looking at the modern or legacy context menu.

Identify which compression command you have
Windows 11’s streamlined context menu hides many older shell extensions behind Show more options. Microsoft’s built-in workflow is still available at Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, which creates a ZIP folder beside the selected file or folder.

| What you see | Where it comes from | What the SendTo change does |
|---|---|---|
| Compress to ZIP file or a similarly worded legacy command | The Compressed (zipped) folder item in the applicable SendTo folder | Restoring the item adds the command; deleting it removes it for that scope |
| Compress to with a ZIP File option | The newer Windows 11 archive submenu | Deleting the old SendTo item does not promise to remove this submenu |
| Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder | The legacy SendTo workflow | Remains the supported built-in route when the item is present |
The distinction matters because an ElevenForum tutorial documents the SendTo shortcut method for the legacy command, while Microsoft describes the newer streamlined menu separately. Feature updates can change labels and menu placement.

Add the legacy “Compress to ZIP file” command
1. Choose the scope you want to change
A SendTo entry can apply to one profile, another named profile, newly created profiles, or (where the shared location is used) multiple users. Decide first; copying a shortcut into your own profile will not change another user’s menu.
| Scope | Typical SendTo location | Who is affected |
|---|---|---|
| Current user | %APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsSendTo |
Only the account currently signed in |
| Specific user | C:Users<UserName>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo |
That named profile, when you have permission to modify it |
| New users | C:UsersDefaultAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo |
Profiles created from the Default profile after the change; it does not repair existing profiles |
| Shared location, where present | C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsSendTo |
A broader machine scope; permissions and Windows configuration determine whether it is used |
The safest way to open the current user’s folder is to press Win + R, enter shell:sendto, and press Enter. For another profile or the Default profile, paste its path into File Explorer’s address bar. Turn on View > Show > File name extensions so that a special SendTo file is not mistaken for an ordinary document.
2. Restore the compressed-folder item
- Open the SendTo folder for the scope selected above.
- Look for an item named Compressed (zipped) Folder. Its special SendTo extension may be hidden until file-name extensions are enabled.
- If it was deleted, restore the identically named item from a working Windows profile or from a backup. On systems that expose it, you can also use the folder’s New > Compressed (zipped) Folder command to recreate the item.
- Close the folder and right-click a test file. Check Show more options > Send to for Compressed (zipped) folder, then check whether the legacy Compress to ZIP file entry has returned.
Restoring the shortcut affects only the selected scope. It is not a universal registry policy unless you deliberately changed a shared, all-user location and have the required administrator rights.

3. Refresh File Explorer if the entry is not visible
Explorer can retain an old context-menu view. Close every File Explorer window and open a new one. If necessary, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager > Processes by selecting it and choosing Restart task. Sign out and back in when the profile cache still shows the old menu.
Remove the legacy command
- Open the SendTo folder for the intended scope. For your own account, use
Win + R,shell:sendto. - Locate Compressed (zipped) Folder.
- Delete the item, or move it to a backup folder outside SendTo if you may want to restore it later.
- Reopen or refresh File Explorer, then test a file through the right-click menu.
This removes the legacy SendTo command only for the scope whose folder you changed. Removing it from your profile does not remove it from another account, from the Default profile, or necessarily from a shared location. Do not delete unrelated SendTo entries: they control other right-click destinations.
What to do when Windows shows “Compress to” instead
Later Windows 11 builds can replace the old wording with a Compress to submenu, including a ZIP File choice. Microsoft says the modern context menu is streamlined and that older commands and extensions remain available through Show more options; exact availability varies by Windows version and application.

If your goal is to hide the modern Compress to submenu, the SendTo shortcut procedure is the wrong control. Deleting Compressed (zipped) Folder can remove the legacy entry while leaving the modern submenu untouched. Windows does not provide a single documented SendTo switch that guarantees removal of every archive command across builds.

Create an archive
- Select one or more files or folders in File Explorer.
- Right-click the selection and choose Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. On builds with the modern menu, choose Compress to > ZIP File instead.
- Windows creates a ZIP folder in the same location, normally using the selected item’s name. Rename it in File Explorer if needed.
Microsoft describes ZIP files as using less storage than uncompressed files and as being faster to transfer than the equivalent uncompressed data. The actual size reduction depends on the contents; already-compressed photographs, video and many installers may shrink little.
Extract an archive
- Right-click the ZIP file.
- Choose Extract All.
- Select a destination, optionally enable the option to show the extracted files when complete, and select Extract.
Add files to an existing ZIP
Open the ZIP folder and drag additional files into it. Windows updates the archive in place. Keep a separate original copy when the archive is being used as the only copy of important data.

Windows 11 24H2 format and encryption limits
Microsoft states that Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archive formats. Support for a format does not mean every feature of that format is implemented. In particular, Microsoft states that Windows does not support operations on encrypted archive files.
For ordinary, unencrypted ZIP work, the built-in tools avoid installing another program. For encrypted archives, password-protected files, or advanced archive settings, Microsoft names 7-Zip and WinRAR as examples of non-Microsoft applications. Check the utility’s current documentation and download it from its official source.
Use extra care with confidential data. Microsoft warns that adding encrypted files to a ZIP can result in those files being unencrypted when extracted. Encryption on an individual source file is therefore not a substitute for an encrypted archive. Verify the archive’s protection and test extraction before sending sensitive material.

Choose the right approach
| Option | Menu surface | Formats | Encryption | Maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legacy SendTo shortcut | Legacy Compress to ZIP file or Send to entry | ZIP-oriented workflow | Not supported by Windows’ built-in encrypted-archive operations | Simple per-user customization, but labels and behavior can change after feature updates |
| Modern Compress to submenu | New Windows 11 context menu | On version 24H2, ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR | Encrypted archive operations unsupported | Managed by Windows; the old SendTo shortcut does not control the whole submenu |
| Third-party archive utility | Its own Explorer integration and commands | Depends on the program; commonly broader than ZIP | Use when encrypted archives are required | Requires separate installation, updates and security review |
Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut is present but the command is missing
- Confirm you edited the profile that is currently signed in.
- Check that the item is named Compressed (zipped) Folder and has not been renamed as a normal file.
- Enable file-name extensions and make sure the special SendTo extension was not replaced with
.txt. - Restart Windows Explorer or sign out and back in.
The old command disappeared after a Windows update
Inspect both menus again. The update may have replaced the legacy wording with Compress to, or moved the older command behind Show more options. Re-adding the SendTo item can restore the legacy route only when that build still honors it.
Another user still sees the command
SendTo changes are scope-specific. Repeat the add or remove operation in that user’s SendTo folder, or adjust the Default profile for accounts created in the future. A change to your own %APPDATA% folder does not automatically propagate to existing profiles.
The archive contains sensitive material
Do not assume that a source file’s encryption survives a built-in ZIP operation. Use a utility that explicitly supports encrypted archives, confirm the protection before sharing, and provide the password through a separate channel.
Practical recommendation
Use the SendTo shortcut when you specifically want the familiar legacy Compress to ZIP file command for one profile or a controlled set of profiles. Leave the modern Compress to submenu alone when you need Windows 11 24H2’s broader format support. Choose a separately maintained archive utility only when encryption or advanced archive features justify the additional software.
