Start with a theme for a coordinated look, or change the background, colors, lock screen and taskbar separately. Windows also includes accessibility settings for stronger contrast, color filters and fewer visual effects.
Choose a theme or customize each element
Open Settings > Personalization > Themes. A Windows theme combines elements such as desktop background pictures, window colors and sounds. Apply a default theme, or select Browse themes to find themes in Microsoft Store. To change parts of a theme, open its Background, Color, Sounds or Mouse cursor settings. Default Windows themes cannot be deleted. Microsoft’s theme guide describes the available controls.

A theme is a convenient starting point if you want several elements to coordinate. For more control over individual choices, set them separately.
Set a desktop background
Go to Settings > Personalization > Background, or right-click the desktop and choose Personalize. Under Personalize your background, choose the kind of background you want:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Picture: Use a Windows image or choose one from your device. Select a fit option to control how it appears on the screen.
- Solid Color: Keep the desktop a single color.
- Slideshow: Choose a folder of images, set how often they change and decide whether to shuffle them. Select a fit option for the images.
- Windows Spotlight: Let Windows display a changing image; Microsoft describes Spotlight as showing a new image from around the world every day.
A picture or solid color stays fixed, a slideshow cycles through your selected folder, and Spotlight provides changing imagery. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing the desktop background.
Choose colors and accent details
Open Settings > Personalization > Colors. Choose Light, Dark or Custom under color mode. Custom lets you set Windows and app modes separately. The available accent color choices include Automatic, which takes a color from the background, and Manual, which lets you choose a recent or Windows color or use the detailed color picker.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
You can enable an accent color on Start and the taskbar only when using Dark or Custom mode. Accent color can also appear on title bars and window borders. Transparency effects can be switched on or off. Dark mode does not necessarily change every application: some apps have their own light or dark settings, and some do not support dark mode. Microsoft’s color settings guide lists these options.
Personalize the lock screen
Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Choose Windows Spotlight, Picture or Slideshow for the background. You can also choose whether to show the lock-screen background on the sign-in screen, select an app for detailed status and select apps for quick status. Where supported, small widgets can appear on the lock screen. Relevant widget content may use an estimated location based on Windows Location service when enabled or, otherwise, the internet connection’s IP address. These options depend on the settings and features available on your device. See Microsoft’s lock-screen instructions.

Make the taskbar and desktop work for you
Taskbar alignment, pins and icons
Windows 11 supports centered or left-aligned taskbar icons. Pin frequently used apps for access from the taskbar, choose which system-tray icons appear, and adjust behaviors such as auto-hide and app-button grouping. Microsoft’s Windows 11 documentation says the taskbar remains at the bottom; do not follow Windows 10 directions on the same support page to move it to another screen edge. Options can vary with Windows updates. See Microsoft’s taskbar guide.
Desktop icons and shortcuts
Open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings to choose which common system icons to show and whether themes can change them. You can also add shortcuts to applications, files or folders, resize icons or hide them. Desktop shortcuts are useful when you want particular items available without pinning them to the taskbar. See Microsoft’s desktop icon instructions.

Adjust Windows for visibility or fewer distractions
Improve color distinction
For stronger visual contrast, go to Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes. Choose or customize a theme with distinct color combinations; customization can include text, hyperlinks, disabled text, selected text, button text and backgrounds. Color filters change the screen’s palette to help distinguish items that differ only by color. These tools are separate from decorative accent-color choices. Read Microsoft’s contrast-theme guidance for details.
