To turn support chat logs into customer stories with Hindsight, store each conversation as one complete, speaker-labeled item, then ask Hindsight to recall memories about a customer and pass only those recalled memories to a language model with instructions to write a short narrative. Hindsight does not keep the transcript verbatim. It stores facts extracted from it, so a summary can only be as complete and accurate as what was extracted and recalled.
This is the pattern behind CustomerStory AI, a local proof of concept described by developer kondapalli Saipranay in a DEV Community post dated September 28, 2026. The stack is React and TypeScript on the front end, FastAPI on the back end, Hindsight for memory, and Groq for inference. The implementation details below come from that write-up and are the author’s own description and observations. Hindsight’s official documentation is cited separately wherever it makes a claim about how the platform behaves.

How the pipeline fits together
The proof of concept has two paths: ingestion, which runs when a conversation is submitted, and summary, which runs when an agent or analyst opens a customer.
Recommended Free Tools
- The React dashboard sends submitted customer interaction text to the FastAPI backend.
- FastAPI calls Hindsight’s
retainoperation, writing the conversation into a shared bank namedcustomer-storywith a support-interaction context. - When a summary is requested, FastAPI calls Hindsight’s
recalloperation with a natural-language query about the customer. - FastAPI extracts the memory text returned by recall and passes it to Groq with a prompt asking for a short customer narrative.
- The dashboard shows the generated summary alongside the recalled interaction history.
The author describes the flow as an implementation, not as independently tested behavior. Hindsight’s Cloud introduction names three core operations, and the table shows how each one appears in this app.
#1 Best Overall
- STRUCTURED LAYOUT FOR FIELD INTERVIEWS: Every page is formatted with dedicated fields for Case Number, Date, Time, and Location. A sturdy backing board gives you a solid writing surface even while standing, so you can capture accurate notes and witness statements on the spot.
- PREMIUM 100GSM PAPER–NO INK BLEED: Made with thick 100gsm paper that holds up to gel pens, ballpoints, and markers without bleeding, ghosting, or feathering. Each notebook gives you 80 sheets (160 pages) of clean writing space that lasts through long shifts.
- POCKET-SIZED & READY WHEN YOU ARE: At 3.5" x 5.7", this notepad slips right into your shirt pocket, duty bag, or glove box. Standard size means it fits most uniform notepad holders, so it's always there when you need it.
- DURABLE SPIRAL BINDING & CLEAN TEAR-OUT: The wire-bound top lets you flip pages 360 degrees for easy one-handed use. Micro-perforated tops mean pages tear out cleanly, no ragged edges–great for handing in reports or filing case notes.
- BUILT FOR THE JOB: Used by academy recruits, patrol officers, sheriffs, and public safety professionals. Whether you're logging shift details, writing up incident reports, or conducting field interviews, these notepads are made for the daily grind.
| Hindsight operation | Role in CustomerStory AI | What the official documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
retain |
Stores each submitted conversation in the customer-story bank. |
Each item is analyzed and decomposed into memories. The content is not kept verbatim. |
recall |
Returns memories matching a natural-language query, which become the input to the summary prompt. | Retrieval combines methods including semantic, keyword, graph, and temporal approaches, as described in Hindsight’s Cloud introduction. Exact behavior can vary by setup or tier. |
reflect |
Not described as used in the author’s write-up. | Named as one of the three core operations in Hindsight’s Cloud introduction. |
Format the chat log before you retain it
Hindsight’s retain API treats each item as raw input to analyze. A conversation item can be plain text, JSON, Markdown, or structured data, as long as it makes clear who said what and when. The official example uses one line per turn in the form Name (timestamp): text, and the request also carries context, a timestamp, and a document_id.
Maya (2026-09-12T10:04:00Z): My invoice was charged twice this month. Support Agent (2026-09-12T10:06:30Z): I can see both charges. I have flagged one for refund. Maya (2026-09-12T10:07:12Z): Thanks. Please send the receipt to my work email, not my personal one.
The lines above are an illustrative format, not the author’s data. Hindsight’s blog post “Structuring Chat Logs for Agent Memory” by Derek Bouius of the Hindsight Team, dated June 23, 2026, gives the following preparation guidance:
- Label every speaker so that statements can be attributed correctly.
- Use real timestamps rather than inferred or placeholder times.
- Identify the speaker in the context field.
- Remove system prompts and injected memories, which are noise rather than new facts about the customer.
- Retain the whole conversation as one item. The post states: “Retain the whole conversation as one item, not one item per message.”
The reason is context. A turn such as “Yes, do that one” means nothing on its own, and the refund request it answers sits several lines above. Splitting the chat into per-message items removes the connective tissue that makes later recall useful.
What Hindsight keeps, and what it does not
The most important implementation fact for this design is that the transcript you submit is not what Hindsight stores. Hindsight’s Ingest Data documentation states: “The content itself is never stored verbatim; what gets stored are the structured facts the LLM extracts from it.”

Two consequences follow for anyone building on this pattern. First, if extraction misses or distorts a detail, recall cannot recover it, so a summary may omit or misstate something the customer actually said. Second, if your product needs the original wording, such as for a dispute or a quality review, you need your own transcript store alongside Hindsight. The latter point is an editorial implication of the documented behavior, not a feature the author tested.
Update a conversation without duplicating it
Support conversations change: new turns arrive, and a case may be exported again later. Hindsight’s guidance distinguishes appending new content from replacing a whole conversation, and it recommends a stable document_id so that re-ingestion targets the same record rather than creating a second copy of it. The same blog post recommends using append for conversations that grow incrementally.
| Situation | Approach supported by Hindsight’s guidance |
|---|---|
| New turns are added to an open conversation | Append the new turns under the same document_id. |
| A complete conversation is re-exported after edits or corrections | Re-ingest it under the same document_id using full replacement, so the record reflects the current version. |
| A conversation has no stable identifier | Not stated in the official guidance. Assign one at ingestion time before relying on re-ingestion. |
The last row is an editorial recommendation that follows from the stable-ID guidance; Hindsight does not describe what happens to duplicate items when no identifier exists.

Hindsight’s blog argues that document size is not the segmentation target. The question is how quickly the information needs to become recallable. A long reference document that will be used later can be batched, while time-sensitive interactions may need smaller, more frequent ingestion units. For a support product, that suggests closing a case and retaining it as one conversation, while a live chat that an agent needs to see immediately may need incremental appends. This application of the guidance is editorial; Hindsight does not give a specific latency figure.

Turn recalled memories into a summary
The author’s summary prompt asks the model to identify important past problems, what made the customer unhappy, the customer’s preferences, and recent issues. It instructs the model not to invent information and to keep the output to three or four sentences.
Two limits matter here. The three-to-four-sentence limit is a prompt constraint, not a measured quality result. Retrieval also makes the prompt more focused, but a relevant memory does not by itself guarantee a faithful summary. The model can still combine facts, overstate a complaint, or fill a gap.
For that reason, the summary should be checked against its inputs before an agent relies on it. A practical check set includes:
- Show the recalled memories next to the generated summary so a reviewer can trace each claim.
- Flag any sentence that does not map to a recalled memory.
- Spot-check a sample of summaries against the original transcripts, which requires keeping them as noted above.
- Treat a summary with no supporting memories as “no information,” not as a blank customer profile.
Request order in the dashboard
The author reports that selecting a customer first fired the history and summary endpoints concurrently with Promise.all(). In their local Hindsight setup, that concurrency sometimes caused database lock contention and HTTP 500 responses. They changed the frontend to request history first and then the summary, sequentially.

This is a debugging observation from one local setup. The write-up does not give a failure rate, and it does not establish that concurrent requests are unsafe in every Hindsight deployment. Sequential calls are not presented as a vendor recommendation. If you see intermittent 500 errors in your own environment, the change is a reasonable first experiment, and it is cheap to test.
What the sample does not establish about customer isolation
The sample writes every customer into one bank, customer-story. Hindsight’s Cloud documentation describes memory banks as dedicated spaces for a particular agent or context, but the author’s write-up does not show how one customer’s memories are kept out of another customer’s summary. It also does not address authorization checks, retention policy, deletion workflows, or how customer identity is separated across accounts.
Do not infer those safeguards from the bank name. Any production version needs to define how recall queries are scoped to a single customer and how that scoping is tested, and it should not rely on the model to avoid mixing customers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecurity and privacy risks of persistent customer memory
Support transcripts can contain personal data, payment details, credentials, and internal notes. Once stored, that material can be recalled into later prompts. Hindsight’s Memory Defense documentation identifies three risk classes for persistent memory.

Secrets entering memory
A secret pasted into a chat can be stored and later surfaced through recall. Redacting it before retention is the simplest control, and Memory Defense provides detectors for this case.
Prompt injection that persists
An instruction hidden in a customer message, such as text telling the assistant to ignore its rules, can be stored and later treated as trustworthy context. The documentation frames this as a memory-specific risk because the injected text outlives the session that introduced it.
Tampering and memory flooding
Low-value or adversarial content can distort what an agent recalls, either by altering stored facts or by flooding a bank with noise. Hindsight’s documentation describes this as a tampering risk to be controlled at the bank level.
Memory Defense policies can be set per bank, with detectors and actions such as allow, redact, or block. The documentation notes that some detectors depend on Cloud Enterprise entitlement, so the controls available to a given account must be confirmed with the vendor. Hindsight’s Cloud security documentation describes the feature this way: “Memory Defense screens every retain call before content reaches storage, so secrets, prompt injections, and tampering attempts never enter your memory bank.” That is the vendor’s description of its own feature, not an independent security audit.
Before treating a prototype like this as production-ready, a team should decide and test:
- Who can read or write customer memories, and how that access is authenticated and logged.
- How much of each transcript is needed, and which fields should be dropped before retention.
- How long memories are kept, and how a customer’s memories are fully deleted on request.
- How one customer’s recall is isolated from every other customer’s.
- Which Memory Defense detectors and actions are enabled, and whether the account’s entitlement covers them.
How this differs from Hindsight’s broader use cases
Hindsight’s GTM article, dated August 12, 2026, describes a different commercial use case. It reconciles calls, CRM history, emails, notes, buyer feedback, support conversations, and documents into evolving deal memories, which record buyer goals, how an opportunity changed, decision factors, and the evidence for or against a conclusion. That is a sales-pipeline application. CustomerStory AI is a customer-support proof of concept, and its design choices should be judged on their own terms.
The Bottom Line
Retaining whole, speaker-labeled conversations and summarizing only recalled memories is a sound starting pattern for a support prototype. The output still needs traceable claims, and the stack should be treated as a proof of concept until access control, retention and deletion, per-customer isolation, and Memory Defense policies are designed and tested.
