A digital audio encoding system represents audio as data that a digital device can store, transmit, or play. It may preserve audio as uncompressed PCM samples or encode it into a compressed bitstream. Encoding does not necessarily mean compression.
What does a digital audio encoding system do?
An encoder takes audio in a digital form and produces data in a representation intended for storage, transmission, or decoding by another system. The result might be uncompressed sample data, or a coded bitstream designed to use less space or bandwidth. The appropriate format depends on the application and on what the receiving decoder can interpret.

For compressed audio, an encoder and decoder work as a pair: the encoder creates coded data, and a conforming decoder reconstructs audio suitable for the intended application. The details vary by coding method; there is no single pipeline shared by every audio encoding system.

Is encoding the same as compression?
No. Encoding is the broader act of representing audio as digital data. Compression is one possible purpose or feature of an encoding method, not a synonym for encoding. PCM can represent audio without compression, while formats in the MPEG audio families use compressed coding approaches. MPEG’s standards overview describes both uncompressed audio and audio-coding standards.

What is the difference between PCM, a codec, and a file format?
- PCM: Pulse-code modulation represents audio as a sequence of samples. It is an uncompressed sample representation, not a particular compressed-audio codec.
- Codec: A coding and decoding method that defines how audio data is encoded and interpreted. The method may be uncompressed or compressed, depending on the system.
- File or carriage format: A structure that carries audio data and may include additional information. A container is not itself necessarily the audio codec inside it.
The distinction matters because PCM data can also be carried in a file format. ISO/IEC 23003-5:2020 specifies uncompressed audio carriage in the ISO base media file format family.
How does a compressed audio encoder work?
Some compressed systems transform or divide digital audio into values that are easier to code compactly. They may use a psychoacoustic model to guide quantization, then scale and code the values and pack the result into frames. These are representative stages, not universal requirements.

For MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Layer II and III audio, ITU-R Recommendation BS.1196-7 notes that “The encoder algorithm is not standardized and may use various means for encoding, such as estimation of the auditory masking threshold, quantization, and scaling.” The recommendation describes MPEG audio specifically; it does not prescribe the internals of every encoder. Read ITU-R Recommendation BS.1196-7.

| Standard | What it covers |
|---|---|

| ISO/IEC 23003-5:2020 | Specifies uncompressed audio carriage in the MPEG-4 file-format family. |
How should you compare encoding systems?
There is no universally best audio encoding system. The relevant choice depends on what the audio is for and how it will be delivered. Audio coding involves trade-offs between compactness and distortion, so a method that suits one use may not suit another. The Audio Engineering Society describes audio coding in terms of representing audio more compactly while optimizing distortion-rate trade-offs. See the AES overview of audio coding.
