You can use an external SSD either to install Windows 11 on a computer or to try to boot Windows itself from the SSD. Those are different jobs: Microsoft’s supported installation-media process uses a USB drive to start Windows Setup, which then installs Windows on a target disk. Running Windows from an external SSD is a portable-workspace workaround; Microsoft’s former Windows To Go feature was removed, and Rufus documents a third-party way to create such a drive.
Choose what you mean by “install Windows 11 on an external SSD”

Do not mistake an installer USB for a portable Windows system disk. The installer is a launch point for Windows Setup; it does not ordinarily run the installed copy of Windows from that same drive.

Install Windows 11 on a PC using the external SSD as installation media
Use this route when you want Windows installed on a computer’s internal disk or another selected target disk. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 download page identifies version 25H2 as the current release and provides the Media Creation Tool. Check the page for current availability when downloading.
Create the installation media
- Back up files on the USB drive you plan to use. Microsoft says the Media Creation Tool deletes the drive’s contents.
- On Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page, download and run the Media Creation Tool, then follow its prompts to make installation media. Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for this method.
- Wait for the tool to complete. The resulting USB drive is installation media, not the disk where the running Windows installation will reside.
Boot the computer and choose the install destination
- Connect the installation drive to the PC. Restart it and open its firmware boot menu, or change boot order in firmware settings, to start from USB. The key or procedure varies by manufacturer; consult the PC maker’s instructions if needed.
- Follow Windows Setup. When prompted for a destination, identify the intended Windows installation disk by its size and other drive details before proceeding. Selecting or formatting the wrong disk can erase its data.
- Complete Setup and allow the PC to restart. If it returns to the installer, remove the installation media or select the newly installed system in the boot menu.
Use installation media on hardware that meets Windows 11 requirements. Microsoft warns that installing on a device below minimum requirements can cause compatibility problems and may affect support and update eligibility; consult its current compatibility guidance before proceeding.

Make a manual installer drive when needed
Microsoft Learn also documents a manual flash-drive method. Its instructions, updated June 14, 2023, describe USB or MiniSD media with at least 5 GB free for that method. This is space for installer media, not a capacity recommendation for a portable Windows system disk.
- Prepare the flash drive as FAT32 for BIOS or UEFI boot and copy the Windows installation files, following Microsoft’s Install Windows from a Flash Drive instructions.
- If
install.wimis larger than FAT32’s 4 GB per-file limit, Microsoft’s documented procedure is to copy the other files and split the WIM into smaller.swmfiles. - Boot the target PC from this drive and use Windows Setup to install Windows to the intended disk.
The manual FAT32 and split-WIM steps concern the creation of installation media. They do not turn the flash drive into an external Windows system disk.

Run Windows from the external SSD: what is and is not supported
A portable Windows workspace is different: the operating system files live on the external SSD, and a compatible PC attempts to boot from it. Microsoft’s legacy Windows To Go feature described this use, but Microsoft states that “Windows To Go is removed in Windows 10, version 2004 and later operating systems.” Its documentation also says Windows To Go did not support feature updates. It is not an officially supported Windows 11 feature.

Whether a drive can be created and booted can depend on the Windows image, the host environment, firmware settings and the particular PC. Do not assume one setup will boot on every computer or receive guaranteed updates.

Before trying a Rufus-created portable workspace
- Download Rufus only from its official website and consult its FAQ for its Windows To Go option and caveats.
- Back up anything on the selected external SSD. Drive-creation operations can erase the selected device; verify its identity and capacity before confirming.
- Check that the computer can boot from USB and review its manufacturer guidance for firmware boot menus and settings.
- Use a USB-connected SSD with sufficiently high random-write performance. Rufus warns that low random-write performance can make an SSD-based USB drive unsuitable for running Windows; this is a qualitative caution, not a benchmark or a guarantee of speed.
- Expect host-dependent results. Boot compatibility, performance and update behavior are not guaranteed across PCs.
Capacity, speed and data-loss distinctions
- Installer drive capacity: Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB for the current Media Creation Tool. Its 5 GB free-space figure applies to the separate manual method documented by Microsoft Learn on June 14, 2023.
- Portable system drive capacity: Neither figure above is a recommended size for a Windows workspace on an external SSD; they are installer-media requirements, not portable-system guidance.
- Installer storage: FAT32 has a 4 GB file-size limit, which matters if a Windows image file exceeds that size when preparing manual installation media.
- Data safety: Media creation deletes the USB drive’s contents, and choosing or formatting a target disk in Setup can erase files. Back up important data and check the selected device before confirming destructive steps.
