If your Android phone has internet but notifications are missing or late, Adaptive Battery is one possible cause—not a proven culprit across all Android phones. Google says it may delay notifications on Pixel phones. First work out whether alerts are not arriving, are arriving silently, or are simply hidden; then check the affected app’s notification settings, battery restrictions, and phone-wide interruption modes.
Why notifications can fail even when internet works
An internet connection does not guarantee that an app can run in the background, is allowed to send notifications, or is permitted to show them in the way you expect. Several separate Android settings can affect delivery or display, and their names and locations vary by phone maker and Android version. Google’s Pixel-specific guidance says Adaptive Battery learns how you use the phone and may reduce performance or delay notifications. That makes it worth checking, but the available guidance does not establish that it is the most common cause—or that it is probably responsible across Android generally. First identify what “not showing” means
Check whether notifications never arrive, arrive only after you open the app, appear silently in the notification shade, or arrive but are absent from the lock screen. These point to different settings. Android supports both alerting and silent notifications; silent ones may still appear when you swipe down, without making a sound or vibrating. If your phone offers notification history, check it for recently dismissed or snoozed items and that day’s notifications. Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Nothing arrives until you open the app: Check app background use, battery settings, and unused-app restrictions.
- The notification is in the shade but made no sound: Check whether its category is set to silent and review sound or vibration settings.
- It appears in the shade but not on the lock screen: Check lock-screen notification display settings; delivery may have worked.
- It is missing only at certain times: Look for Battery Saver, Do Not Disturb, or a scheduled Mode.
Check the app’s notification permission and categories
On phones whose menus match Google’s instructions, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose the affected app, and make sure notifications and the relevant categories are enabled. If a notification from the app is already in the shade, touch and hold it to open its notification settings. Some apps also have separate notification controls inside the app.

Categories matter: an app may be allowed to notify you while a particular type of alert is disabled or set to silent. Menu names and placement differ across devices. For Android’s notification controls and device-specific variation, see Google’s notification guidance.
Test Adaptive Battery and app battery use on Pixel
Google’s Pixel guidance states: “To extend battery life, it may reduce performance and delay notifications.” The statement is specifically about Pixel’s Adaptive Battery and battery optimization, not a finding that Adaptive Battery causes most missing notifications on every Android phone.

For the Pixel steps covered by Google’s Android 14-and-later instructions, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. The usual per-app setting is Optimized. For a specific app with a reproducible notification problem, you can test whether allowing more background use fixes it. Turning off optimization for that app may let it run more while unused, but can use more battery; it does not require turning Adaptive Battery off for the whole phone. Treat this as a targeted diagnostic, not a default setting for every app. Google Pixel Phone Help: Keep Adaptive Battery & battery optimization on.

Battery Saver is distinct from Adaptive Battery. Google says it limits or turns off background activity, and that apps, features, or network connections may experience delays while it is enabled. If it is on or scheduled, temporarily turn it off and see whether the affected app’s notifications return. Change this one setting at a time and retest so you can tell whether it mattered. See whether Android is pausing an unused app
Android can restrict apps that have not been used for a long time. Google says this can include revoking permissions, stopping background activity, and stopping notifications. Open the phone’s Unused apps view and check whether the affected app is being treated as unused. If you need its ongoing notifications, turn off Pause app activity if unused for that app. The exact route to this control can vary by device. Google Android Help: Manage unused apps on your Android device.
Check Do Not Disturb, scheduled Modes, and lock-screen display
Do Not Disturb and other Modes can filter which apps are allowed to notify you. Turn Do Not Disturb off briefly as a test, then inspect scheduled Modes such as Bedtime or Driving that might switch on automatically. If the notification is present in history or the notification shade but absent from the lock screen, adjust lock-screen display settings instead of treating it as a delivery failure. Mode names, filters, and available controls depend on the phone and Android version. Google Android Help: Limit interruptions with Modes & Do Not Disturb on Android.

Use the symptom and timing to narrow the cause
| What you notice | Settings to check first | Scope or timing clue |
|---|---|---|
| No alert until the app is opened | App battery use, Adaptive Battery on Pixel, and unused-app pausing | More suggestive of an app’s background activity than a lock-screen display choice. |
| Notifications are late while Battery Saver is active | Battery Saver | A phone-wide setting that can limit background activity while enabled. |
| Some alert types are missing or quiet | App notification permission, categories, and alerting versus silent behavior | May affect one app or only particular notification categories. |
| Notifications are suppressed at particular hours or activities | Do Not Disturb and scheduled Modes | Check schedules and filters, even if you did not turn a Mode on manually at that moment. |
| Notification appears in the shade but not on the lock screen | Lock-screen notification display settings | Points to visibility rather than necessarily a failure to deliver. |
Try one relevant change, then wait for or reproduce the affected notification before changing another setting. This makes it easier to identify the cause and avoids unnecessarily weakening several battery protections. On Pixel, allowing more background use for an app can trade battery life for more timely activity.

If notifications still do not arrive
- Restart the phone.
- Install available Android system and app updates.
- Follow the support instructions for your phone’s manufacturer and exact Android version if a menu or setting described above is missing.
- Do not start with a factory reset: it removes device data. Consider it only after simpler checks and after backing up what you need.
Google’s Android help recommends restarting and checking for Android and app updates when battery problems persist; notification guidance also notes that settings differ by device. The cited support pages are official guidance, not comparative tests across manufacturers, so they do not establish that every Android phone implements these controls identically.
