If two people’s details appear together as one contact on your iPhone, Apple calls that a unified contact made from linked contact cards. To separate the cards, unlink them rather than deleting a contact. Apple’s current iPhone guide explains linking but does not document an individual unlink control on iPhone; its explicit unlink steps are for Mac Contacts.
What “unmerge” means in Apple Contacts
Apple says linked cards from different accounts can appear together as one person in All Contacts. The underlying cards remain separate: Apple Support’s iPhone guide to duplicate contacts states, “When you link contacts, those contacts aren’t merged.” In everyday terms, unmerging usually means unlinking those cards so they appear separately again.

Unlink the cards using Mac Contacts
Apple documents an individual unlink procedure in Contacts on Mac. Use this route if you need to separate particular cards and have access to a Mac:
- Open Contacts on your Mac and select the unified contact.
- Click Edit.
- Click Remove next to the account card or cards you want to unlink.
Apple says removing an account card from a linked contact unlinks the cards and removes only the selected account’s card from the unified view. See Apple’s instructions for linking contacts in Contacts on Mac.

What you can do on iPhone
Apple’s reviewed current iPhone documentation does not describe a button or menu for unlinking one card from a unified contact on iPhone. Its available account controls affect an account’s contacts more broadly, rather than separating one linked card.
Hide an account’s contacts on this iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts.
- Select the relevant account and turn off Contacts.
This changes whether contacts from that account appear on the iPhone; it is not an individual unlink operation. Apple says the contacts remain in the internet account and on other devices already set up with that account.

Remove an account from the iPhone
In the same Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts area, select the account and choose the option to delete or remove it. This removes the account from the phone and affects its contacts there. It is a whole-account action, not a way to unlink just one contact. Apple describes these account controls in its iPhone Contacts account instructions.

Choose the action that matches the problem
- Only one contact’s cards need separating: use the documented unlink steps in Mac Contacts.
- You want to hide contacts from an account on this iPhone: turn off Contacts for that account in Settings.
- You want to remove the account from this iPhone: use the account removal control, understanding that it affects the account’s contacts on the phone.
- You want to separate cards without risking deletion: do not delete a contact as a substitute for unlinking.
Why deleting a contact is not unlinking
Deleting a record can remove it from the account that stores it, rather than simply separating it from a unified view. Apple warns that a contact deleted from an email account is permanently deleted from devices signed in to that account. Deletion can therefore affect more than the iPhone. See Apple’s contact management and deletion guidance.
