If your microphone isn’t working in Windows 11, check privacy access and the selected input device first, then verify the connection and test the mic in Settings. These steps fix common configuration problems before you move on to troubleshooting tools, device settings, or drivers. Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows build.
1. Turn on microphone access
Windows privacy settings can prevent apps from using a microphone even when the device is connected and working.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- If the affected program is a Microsoft Store app, make sure its individual access toggle is on.
- For conventional desktop software, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Desktop apps may not appear in the individual-app list, so an app’s absence there does not by itself mean access is blocked. See Microsoft’s guide to Windows privacy settings.

2. Select the microphone you want to use
Windows or an app may be listening to a different input than the one you expect—for example, a webcam mic instead of a headset mic.

Quick wins for a faster PC:

7. Check Device Manager and audio drivers
Move to driver checks if the microphone remains undetected after you have checked access, connection, input selection, and troubleshooting.
- Open Device Manager and locate the relevant audio device.
- Following Microsoft’s instructions, uninstall the audio device and restart the PC so Windows can try to reinstall it.
- If needed, scan for hardware changes or update the driver.
Driver controls and device names vary by PC. If a driver is missing or incompatible, Microsoft advises obtaining the appropriate driver from the computer or sound-card manufacturer rather than assuming one driver fits every machine. Follow the support instructions for your specific PC. See Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting steps and general audio guidance.
8. Compare with an external microphone
If a built-in mic still will not capture sound, connect a known-working external microphone or headset and repeat the Windows test. If the external device works while the internal microphone does not, that comparison points toward an issue with the built-in mic but does not prove a specific hardware failure; contact the PC manufacturer if service may be needed. Microsoft also recommends trying a headset or external mic for voice-typing input problems in its voice typing troubleshooting guidance.
An external mic can be a useful diagnostic tool as well as a lasting replacement. If you need one, check that its connection type—USB, 3.5 mm, or Bluetooth—is compatible with your PC. There is no need to buy one just to troubleshoot a privacy setting or a microphone selected incorrectly in an app.
