In a 2022 peer-reviewed study, whisky reacted with a gold(III) solution to form colored gold nanoparticles; the researchers proposed the method as a possible future warehouse tool, not a validated consumer test.
What the gold salt whisky test measures
The assay measures how whisky compounds interact with a gold(III) solution. In the study, the mixture formed gold nanoparticles at room temperature, producing a visible color response that shifted from yellow or amber toward pink or red over several minutes. The researchers also examined the reaction’s optical extinction profile, including the position and growth of its peak and the profile’s shape.

Those features act as a chemical fingerprint associated with agedness in the samples studied. They are not a direct reading of a whisky’s calendar age. The method responds to aspects of composition that develop during maturation, rather than counting years in a cask.
Why the reaction changes
Whisky contains compounds, or congeners, formed or affected during cask maturation. The study’s controls indicated that these compounds were important to reducing the gold salts; alcohol content alone did not account for the response. The resulting nanoparticles produce the visible color and optical signal.

This makes the assay potentially useful for distinguishing chemical characteristics associated with maturation. It does not mean that one color corresponds to a particular age, or that color alone reveals a whisky’s flavor or quality.
What the 2022 study established
Gracie, Zamberlan, Andrews, Smith, and Peveler reported the work in “Growth of Plasmonic Nanoparticles for Aging Cask-Matured Whisky,” published in ACS Applied Nano Materials in 2022. Their longitudinal series followed malt spirit matured in a first-fill American Standard Barrel for six years, with samples collected at approximately six-month intervals. The researchers adjusted the samples to 40% alcohol by volume for comparison.

The series offers a proof of concept, not broad validation across whisky. It represents one cask’s maturation history alongside commercial samples; it does not establish that the method works consistently across all whisky styles, casks, distilleries, or production conditions.

That is a claim about an indicator of chemical agedness, not a validated conversion from test result to age statement.

How a distillery might use it
The researchers suggested that a future version could assist on a distillery warehouse floor by helping identify cask samples worth further bottling or blending assessment. In that role, the assay would be a decision aid: it could help compare chemical responses, while distillers would still need to interpret the result in context.
The study also points to further work needed to relate reaction profiles to specific congeners and flavor. It does not establish routine use in distilleries or show that a commercial testing service or kit is available.

Why this is not a home test
The published procedure is a laboratory method, not a consumer recipe. The optimized reaction used a 100 μL total volume, a 1:1 ratio of neat whisky to gold solution, and a final gold concentration of 0.125 mM. These are study conditions, not instructions for testing a bottle at home; interpreting the optical profile also involves measurement beyond simply looking at the color.

What it can—and cannot—tell you
- It can: indicate chemical features associated with maturation in the kinds of samples studied.
- It cannot establish: a definitive number of years in a cask, a legally stated age, or whether a whisky tastes better.
- Its evidence supports: a promising research method and potential distillery decision aid.
- Its evidence does not yet support: a validated home test or universal result across whisky.
The distinction matters because a chemical indicator of aged character is not the same thing as a bottle’s stated age. The study explored whether the reaction profile tracks maturation-related chemistry; it did not validate the assay as a replacement for age statements, sensory judgment, or comprehensive laboratory analysis.
