Small hive beetles (Aethina tumida) can use a honey bee alarm pheromone as a scent cue to locate colonies. A 2007 study found that beetles detected isopentyl acetate (IPA) at a tested level that bee antennae did not detect, and that IPA attracted beetles in controlled flight-tunnel tests. The researchers also found that beetle-associated yeast growing on bee-collected pollen produced volatiles that attracted beetles. These laboratory findings suggest how beetles may find and gather at hives; they do not show that the beetle causes colony collapse disorder.
How can a bee alarm signal help a beetle?
Honey bees release isopentyl acetate, or IPA, as part of their alarm pheromone. The signal helps bees respond to a threat, but the small hive beetle can detect and follow the same chemical. The bees are not warning beetles; the beetles are exploiting a cue that serves a different purpose for the colony.

In their 2007 PNAS study, Baldwyn Torto and colleagues measured chemical emissions, tested insect antennae, and ran controlled flight-tunnel assays. They reported that small hive beetle antennae detected an IPA-equivalent level of 2 ng in hive-entrance volatiles, while guard and forager bee antennae did not detect that tested level. This is a comparison under the study’s assay conditions, not a general measure of which species has the better sense of smell. Read the PNAS study.

IPA alone also attracted beetles in a flight-tunnel assay. At the highest tested release rate, 120 ng per hour, 32% of males and 40% of females showed their maximum upwind response. Those percentages describe a laboratory response—not the share of beetles that would find a hive outdoors.

What role do stress and the beetle-associated yeast play?
Stressed bees can release more IPA
The paper estimated that 100 artificially stressed European honey bees released 50–120 ng of IPA per hour. By comparison, it estimated 0.8–6 ng per hour at the entrance of an undisturbed colony. In the study’s estimates, that is roughly 1,500–10,000 times more IPA from the stressed group. These figures compare the specific conditions measured and estimated in the 2007 study; they are not current field measurements or a prediction for every colony.
Yeast and pollen may create another attractant
The researchers found that beetles from the United States and Africa carried a strain of the yeast Kodamaea ohmeri. In experiments, the yeast produced IPA and other volatile compounds when grown on bee-collected pollen. Yeast-inoculated pollen attracted beetles in wind-tunnel tests.

From these results, the authors proposed a sequence: beetles detect hive odors and enter a colony; beetle-associated yeast reaches pollen; and fermentation produces attractive odors that may draw more beetles. The experiments support parts of this proposed mechanism, but do not establish how often it recruits beetles in natural colonies.

The study discussed differences in the behavioral defenses of African and European honey bees. It described African honey bees as removing beetle eggs and imprisoning invading beetles, while European colonies were considered more vulnerable in some conditions. These are population- and context-dependent observations and interpretations, not a rule that applies to every colony on either continent.

Colony condition matters to the proposed chemical pathway, too: the study’s stressed-bee emissions were substantially higher than its estimate for an undisturbed colony entrance. The work does not establish a universal stress threshold or quantify how a particular management practice changes the risk of beetle infestation.

The 2007 study does not establish small hive beetles as the cause of colony collapse disorder (CCD). A contemporaneous Chemistry World report said the beetle could not be the main explanation for the CCD problem then being discussed. It quoted bee ecologist Bernard Vaissiere as saying, “I do not think that there is a link between the greater susceptibility of the European honeybee to the small hive beetle and colony collapse disorder.” The quote and assessment belong to that 2007 context; neither turns the beetle into an explanation for CCD or colony losses generally. What the study does—and does not—tell beekeepers
- It offers a plausible mechanism: beetles can detect IPA, and yeast-inoculated pollen produced attractive odors in controlled tests.
- It is not a field-risk estimate: the reported responses do not show how many beetles will locate a hive under ordinary conditions today.
- It is not a trap comparison: controlled assay traps were used to study odor attraction, not to compare retail hive traps or establish their field effectiveness.
- It is not a current distribution or management guide: the 2007 findings do not establish present-day pest range, local rules, or the best response for a particular apiary.
