If Windows 11 says Memory integrity is turned off, open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and check the Memory integrity control and any incompatible-driver notice. If Windows identifies a driver, check Windows Update and the device or PC maker for a compatible version. Hardware virtualization must also be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. The warning alone does not say which issue applies to your PC.
What the Memory integrity warning means
Memory integrity—also known as hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI)—is a Windows virtualization-based security feature designed to strengthen protection of kernel code integrity. Windows Security has displayed a warning when the feature is off since Windows 11 version 22H2, but the warning is not a diagnosis of the cause. Check Core isolation details for the specific status or driver message. Microsoft Learn explains Memory integrity and its configuration; Microsoft also describes its role in HVCI driver compatibility guidance.

How to turn Memory integrity on
- Open the setting: Go to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details, then locate Memory integrity. Microsoft Support documents this section in its Device Security guide.
- Enable it if available: Turn on Memory integrity. Restart Windows if prompted, then return to the same page to check its status.
- If it is missing or cannot be enabled: Check whether hardware virtualization is enabled in your device’s UEFI/BIOS. The menus and steps vary by manufacturer, so follow the PC maker’s instructions rather than guessing a key sequence. Microsoft’s configuration guidance explains the virtualization requirement.
- If Windows names incompatible drivers: Record the exact driver names. Check Windows Update, then look for a compatible update from the PC or device manufacturer. If no compatible driver is available, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or app that depends on it before enabling Memory integrity.
What to do about an incompatible driver
Use the driver name shown by Windows to identify the affected device or software, and prefer an update from Windows Update or its manufacturer. Driver compatibility depends on the installed hardware, driver, software, and Windows configuration; a generic fix is not reliable. Microsoft’s HVCI driver compatibility documentation covers why drivers may not work with the feature.

If the manufacturer offers no compatible driver, removing the dependent device or app is a conditional fallback—not a step to take before identifying what uses the driver. Avoid deleting arbitrary driver-store packages or changing registry values as an initial consumer fix. Microsoft documents registry and policy methods for managed deployment and recovery, but those are advanced procedures rather than the ordinary troubleshooting path.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Why the control may be unavailable
- Virtualization is off: Memory integrity requires hardware virtualization enabled in UEFI/BIOS.
- A driver is incompatible: Windows may identify a driver that prevents activation. Check for a compatible manufacturer update before considering removal of the dependent device or app.
- The setting is managed: On an enterprise-managed PC, policy may control the setting. A standard user may not be permitted to change it; contact the organization’s administrator.
Risks and recovery if Windows becomes unstable
Microsoft warns that incompatible apps or drivers may malfunction when Memory integrity is enabled. In rare cases, a compatibility issue can cause a boot failure, so resolve any listed driver issue before proceeding where possible. If turning the feature on leads to serious instability or Windows will not boot, follow Microsoft’s documented Windows Recovery Environment guidance. Recovery steps depend on how the feature was enabled; if it was enabled with a UEFI lock, disabling Secure Boot may be required for recovery.
