A p-value is evidence conditional on a no-difference model and the analysis assumptions—not the probability that a winner is real, important, or guaranteed to repeat.
Start with the decision the test needs to answer
State what you are changing, who is being tested, and what result would justify acting. For example: “For this audience, does subject line B increase placed-order rate enough to justify using it?” Pick one primary outcome before launch. Treat other measures as guardrails or exploratory signals, rather than choosing whichever metric looks best afterward. The American Marketing Association’s email marketing guide likewise emphasizes a clear hypothesis, an isolated variable, an appropriate measure, and a test long enough to interpret.

Choose a metric that matches the goal
Define both the outcome and its denominator in advance, then use the same definitions for each variant. Depending on the decision, the denominator might be delivered recipients rather than everyone sent the message; the important point is consistency and clarity.

| Metric | Useful when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Open rate | The test concerns subject-line engagement and open tracking is meaningful. | Apple Mail Privacy Protection can inflate reported opens. Klaviyo discusses this limitation in its campaign A/B testing guidance. |
| Click rate | You want to measure response to links or content. | A click may not represent a purchase or other final business outcome. |
| Order or conversion rate | The decision is about a commercial action and tracking is reliable. | These events are often rarer, so detecting a given relative change can require more recipients. |
Indiana University’s Salesforce Marketing Cloud email-testing guide describes choosing open-rate or click-through-rate criteria depending on the email and test. If the real goal is an order, an open-rate win alone does not establish that the campaign produced more orders.

Plan the sample around the effect worth acting on
Estimate the baseline rate from comparable sends. Decide the smallest improvement that would justify changing the email, the significance threshold, and the desired power; use those assumptions to calculate recipients needed per variant. Adobe Target describes 80% as a commonly used power level and explains why smaller effects require more observations in its sample-size guidance. That convention does not make 80% mandatory, and a test that returns a significant result was not necessarily designed to detect the effect that matters to the business.
There is no universal email-list minimum. Required sample depends on the baseline rate, the worthwhile effect, the significance level, power, allocation, and number of variants. Since no campaign baseline, target effect, or audience size is specified here, a responsible numeric recipient recommendation cannot be calculated.

Do not treat a platform label’s minimum as a general sample-size rule. As described in Klaviyo’s 2025 guidance, its campaign “statistically significant” label uses at least 50 recipients per variation and at least 90% win probability. Those are Klaviyo product criteria, not a substitute for a power calculation for your test.

Randomly assign eligible recipients when possible, keep audience eligibility and timing comparable, and avoid changing the test while it runs. If the comparison is intended to isolate a variant difference, send variants concurrently to comparable groups. Indiana University’s guide describes testing portions of an audience before sending a winner to the remainder, or splitting equally when everyone must receive the email at the same time. In Marketo Engage’s whole-email test workflow, variations are assigned to equal portions of the selected test sample; Adobe also warns that selecting 100% of a static audience leaves no audience members for a later winner send. See the Marketo whole-email A/B test documentation.

Choose a target sample, run duration, and analysis rule before looking at interim outcomes. Ordinary fixed-horizon p-values are not valid for the same stopping rule if you repeatedly check results and stop as soon as one looks significant. If you need to make decisions during a test, use a sequential method designed for continuous monitoring; the paper “Always Valid Inference: Bringing Sequential Analysis to A/B Testing” explains the problem with outcome-driven sample sizes and develops always-valid inference.
Report the size and uncertainty of the difference
For each variant, record the eligible or delivered recipient count and the number of outcome events. Report the rates, the absolute difference in percentage points, and relative lift if it helps communicate scale. Also report an interval for the difference, the primary metric, and—if using a p-value test—the p-value and threshold chosen before analysis.
For example, moving from 4% to 5% is an increase of 1 percentage point, or a 25% relative lift. Those describe the observed difference; neither says how precisely the effect has been estimated. A confidence interval adds that uncertainty: if a two-sided interval for the difference includes zero, the data have not established a nonzero difference at that interval’s nominal level. The interval’s bounds also show which effect sizes remain plausible. Firebase’s experiment-results guidance presents observed rates and lift alongside inference results.
A p-value answers a narrower question: assuming the no-difference model and analysis assumptions are true, how surprising would a result at least this extreme be? It does not mean that a p-value of .03 gives B a 97% chance of being better. A 0.05 significance threshold is common, not universal, and passing it does not guarantee the result will repeat. Conversely, a large p-value does not prove the variants are equal.
Best Value
If an interval includes both no effect and an improvement large enough to matter, the right conclusion for the decision is inconclusive. A small p-value can accompany a lift too small to justify a campaign change; a wide interval can leave a potentially useful improvement unresolved. Firebase recommends considering the lower end of the improvement interval and relevant secondary metrics before rollout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for multiple variants, metrics, and segments
Every additional variant, metric, or audience segment creates another opportunity to find a chance result. Adobe illustrates the accumulation with an example: at a 5% threshold, ten independent tests have approximately a 40% chance of at least one false positive when there is no real lift. This is an illustration under those assumptions, not a general email-performance statistic.
Pre-specify the primary comparison, adjust for planned multiple comparisons where appropriate, and label post-test segment searches as exploratory. Validate an interesting segment finding in a new test before treating it as a dependable targeting rule. Adobe discusses these pitfalls in its A/B testing documentation.

Combine statistical evidence with the estimated effect, its uncertainty, campaign costs, operational fit, and potential trade-offs in secondary measures. A reliably small gain may not warrant changing a campaign. A promising but imprecise result may justify another test when the expected value of learning is worth the cost. A platform’s winner badge is not a universal statistical verdict: inspect the metric, counts, uncertainty, and documented rule. Indiana University notes that a winner can be declared without a statistically significant difference, while Klaviyo’s label follows its own product criteria.
