Windows 11 Memory Compression: PowerShell Commands to Know

Use the built-in PowerShell commands Enable-MMAgent -MemoryCompression to enable memory compression or Disable-MMAgent -MemoryCompression to disable it. Then run Get-MMAgent and check the MemoryCompression value. Microsoft’s cited references are shown in the Windows Server 2025 documentation view rather than a Windows 11-specific view, so their guidance is not explicitly scoped to Windows 11.

Enable memory compression in PowerShell

1. Open PowerShell with administrator privileges. This is a practical precaution; the cited Microsoft command references do not specify an elevation requirement.

   Enable-MMAgent -MemoryCompression

   The documented short alias for -MemoryCompression is -mc, so Enable-MMAgent -mc is equivalent. Use only this switch to target memory compression rather than changing other MMAgent features. Microsoft Learn: Enable-MMAgent

Disable memory compression

In the same PowerShell session, run:

Disable-MMAgent -MemoryCompression

You can use the documented alias instead: Disable-MMAgent -mc. As with the enable command, include only the memory-compression switch. Microsoft Learn: Disable-MMAgent

Check whether it is reported as enabled

Run:

Get-MMAgent

Inspect the MemoryCompression entry in the output to see the state reported by MMAgent. Microsoft describes this command as returning MMAgent feature state. Microsoft Learn: Get-MMAgent

What the commands do—and what the documentation does not establish

Enable-MMAgent and Disable-MMAgent manage MMAgent features through their switches. Keep the command limited to -MemoryCompression (or its -mc alias) if your goal is to change memory compression alone; other MMAgent options control different features. The MMAgent module index lists these commands.
