An AI lead-generation chatbot can engage a website visitor, ask a few questions tied to your sales-fit criteria, and send useful context to your CRM or sales team. It can make the first interaction faster and more structured; it cannot guarantee more leads. To make it useful, decide what counts as qualified, provide a clear next step, connect the conversation to follow-up, and measure qualified outcomes rather than chat volume.
What is a lead generation chatbot?
It is a conversational tool on a website or other digital channel that answers visitor questions, gathers contact and intent information, and helps determine whether a prospect fits a business’s sales criteria. Depending on the setup, it may create a lead record, offer a meeting, or transfer a conversation to a person.

The important distinction is between activity and value: a high number of chats does not necessarily mean the business has more useful prospects. The bot has to collect information the sales team can act on and pass it along with enough context to make follow-up relevant.
How do chatbots qualify leads?
They ask questions that reflect the business’s actual definition of a good prospect, then use the answers to suggest an appropriate next step or route the conversation. Salesforce gives examples of qualification criteria such as industry, company size, pain points, and readiness to purchase; the right criteria depend on the product and sales process. See Salesforce’s guide to qualifying leads with chatbots.
#1 Best Overall
- Fit: Does the visitor work in a relevant industry or organization type?
- Scale: Is the company size or need compatible with the offering?
- Problem: What is the visitor trying to solve?
- Readiness: Is the visitor exploring, evaluating, or ready to speak with sales?
Keep the questions short and only ask for information that changes routing or follow-up. A visitor who meets the criteria might be offered a meeting or a live handoff. Someone who does not might receive a useful answer or another relevant next step instead of being pushed into a sales booking.
How to set up a chatbot for qualified leads
1. Choose the outcome first
Decide whether the bot should capture contact details, qualify and route a prospect, schedule a demo, handle quote requests, or support more than one of these tasks. The goal determines what information to ask for and which results to track. Salesforce describes lead creation, demo scheduling, quote requests, and sales contact as possible chatbot tasks in its chatbot overview.

2. Define qualification rules before writing prompts
Agree with the sales team on a small set of fit criteria and what should happen when a visitor does or does not meet them. For instance, a particular company size may merit a sales handoff, while a visitor who is still researching may be better served by an answer or a follow-up resource. Do not collect details simply because the bot can ask for them.

3. Design a conversation that helps the visitor
Make the bot answer relevant questions as well as gather information. Explain why you need a detail when the reason is not obvious, and let the visitor reach an appropriate next step without navigating a long interrogation. Provide a human handoff when the question is outside the bot’s scope or the visitor wants a person. Vendor materials describe qualification, demos, quotes, and transfers, but do not establish a universally best script.

4. Connect the conversation to records and routing
Send captured details to the CRM or marketing system so a conversation can become a lead record and support follow-up. Preserve context such as the source page or channel where possible; it can help a representative understand why the person reached out. Configure ownership and duplicate handling for the platform you use rather than assuming every bot or CRM handles these choices the same way. Salesforce discusses CRM-connected lead capture and routing in its lead-qualification guidance and chatbot overview.
5. Measure lead quality and handoffs
Track the outcomes that correspond to the goal you chose, not just how many conversations started. Salesforce describes passive qualification as lead records created and active qualification as sessions transferred to a representative. It also recommends monitoring conversion and response time in its Einstein Bots metrics documentation.
Rank #4
- Lead records created from chatbot conversations
- Qualified conversations transferred to sales
- Chat-to-qualified-lead conversion
- Time to human response after a handoff
- Downstream outcomes, such as meetings held or sales, when available
Review conversation transcripts and look for repeated confusion, unanswered questions, or abandonment points. Use those patterns to adjust prompts and qualification rules; do not treat a change in results as proof that one prompt alone caused it.

6. Build privacy into the flow
Before collecting contact or other personal information, review the notice, consent, retention, and follow-up requirements that apply to your business and visitors. Salesforce flags GDPR and CCPA considerations in its chatbot guidance, but legal obligations depend on the actual data and jurisdictions involved. Have the proposed collection and messaging flow checked against the rules that apply to your organization.

Can I use AI to generate leads?
Yes, AI can support lead generation by engaging visitors, gathering information, and helping route potential prospects. The practical result depends on the fit of the qualification criteria, the usefulness of the conversation, and whether captured details reach someone who can follow up. The available vendor case studies are examples, not a neutral estimate of what another business should expect.
HubSpot reported that its internal SalesBot’s qualified-lead conversion rate rose from 3% to 5% after described upgrades in a January 6, 2026 account of the project. That is a vendor-reported internal result; it does not establish that chatbots generally produce the same increase or that one specific change caused the full difference. HubSpot writer Erica Agrodnia described the project’s aim: “We wanted something that could think like a sales rep: qualify, guide, and sell in real-time.” The quote describes the product goal, not independent evidence of performance. See HubSpot’s account of building SalesBot.
Separately, HubSpot reported that Professional and Enterprise customers using Breeze Assistant for marketing tasks generated four times as many leads as comparable customers not using it, based on average leads created in February 2026. This was a vendor-reported comparison about marketing tasks such as audience definition, personalized outreach drafting, and routine follow-up—not a chatbot-specific result. It should not be read as a forecast for chatbot deployments. See HubSpot’s Breeze AI agents announcement.
What to check when choosing a chatbot or CRM-connected tool
Evaluate a tool against the workflow your team needs rather than a headline claim about lead volume. Check whether it:
- Works with your CRM or marketing system and supports the record and duplicate handling you need
- Can apply your qualification logic while preserving useful visitor and source-page context
- Supports the routing, calendar booking, or human handoff your sales process requires
- Reports qualified leads and downstream outcomes rather than only chat counts
- Is currently supported and appropriate for your team’s implementation plans
Product status can change. Salesforce says Einstein Bots entered maintenance mode on August 17, 2026: existing bots remain supported, but receive no new features or enhancements. Salesforce recommends Agentforce for new AI-agent implementations. Check the current status and fit before choosing or expanding a Salesforce bot deployment; see the Salesforce Einstein Bots documentation.
