It is not yet clear whether the darker Windows 11 low-battery window and less-rounded close button reported after KB5120998 are a deliberate design change or a visual glitch. Microsoft’s release notes do not mention the dialog’s appearance, and the forum report has no confirmed diagnosis or fix.

What changed in the report?

On August 28, 2026, a Windows 11 user described the “your battery is running low” dialog as looking “this black” after installing KB5120998. The user also said its close button was no longer rounded as before. These descriptions report an appearance change; they do not establish what caused it.

The user said the computer had been restarted after a forum respondent suggested restarting. The thread does not confirm that restarting fixed the appearance or report another resolution. Read the August 28 ElevenForum report.

What is KB5120998, and does Microsoft call this a redesign?

Microsoft identifies KB5120998 as an August 27, 2026 cumulative preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, associated with OS builds 26100.9278 and 26200.9278. Its published notes cover features, improvements, and known issues, but do not mention a change to the low-battery dialog’s color or close-button shape, or a fix for the reported appearance. That means the change is undocumented in those notes—not that Microsoft has established it as either intentional or a glitch.

The Microsoft KB5120998 release notes are the place to check for documented changes and known issues. The Microsoft Update Catalog listing shows packages for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 on arm64 and x64 systems.

How to check whether your PC matches the report

  1. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, and OS build.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and check whether KB5120998 is listed as installed.
  3. Compare those details with the reported update and the Microsoft release notes. Record the device model as well; the forum report does not provide enough device or build information to identify a cause.

What to do if the dialog looks different

If the appearance change is the only symptom, the available information does not establish a cause or a confirmed remedy. A restart was suggested in the forum, but the reporter had already restarted and no fix was confirmed. Check Microsoft’s release notes and known-issue information for current guidance rather than uninstalling the update or changing system components based on this single report.
