A slow MacBook can have several causes, so start by matching the slowdown to a likely bottleneck instead of trying generic “speed-up” tricks. Check available startup-disk space, CPU and memory activity, app compatibility, and—if there are disk-related symptoms—the disk itself. These built-in checks are low-risk, but none guarantees a performance improvement.
Start with the symptom, not a cleanup app
Apple lists several possible reasons a Mac may run slowly: limited space on the startup disk, memory pressure, incompatible apps, unused apps that remain open, or disk problems. Its guidance is to check for likely causes rather than assume there is one fix. Apple’s slow-Mac guide covers these first-line checks.

- Low available storage: Review the Storage settings and consider removing or moving files you no longer need on the startup disk.
- High CPU or memory use: Use Activity Monitor to see whether an app or process is consuming resources.
- App compatibility: Check the app’s requirements if the slowdown is tied to a particular application.
- Possible disk trouble: Use Disk Utility to verify and try to fix disk problems when symptoms or checks point in that direction.
The menu names below vary by macOS version. If a path does not match your Mac, check Apple’s guide for the version installed on it.

In macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. In earlier macOS versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Apple’s storage guide describes these routes and ways to free space.

Review the categories and Apple’s storage recommendations before deleting anything. Useful places to inspect include large media files and Downloads, applications you no longer use, and old device backups you are certain you do not need. Files in Trash still occupy disk space until you empty it, so review its contents before doing so.
You can also move files to another disk or an external storage device to make room on the startup disk. That is a way to manage storage, not a guarantee that an external drive will make the Mac faster. macOS can use iCloud to make storage space available when needed, but that depends on the iCloud storage available on your plan.

The broad System Data category may include Apple and third-party files that do not fit more specific storage categories. Its presence alone does not identify a safe cleanup target; do not delete arbitrary hidden files just because they appear to be part of System Data. Apple’s explanation of storage categories describes what this label can include.
Use Activity Monitor to find resource-heavy apps
Activity Monitor shows CPU activity and memory use, which can help you determine whether an app or process is contributing to the slowdown. To inspect CPU use, open Activity Monitor and select the CPU tab; Apple documents the available views in its CPU activity guide. Select Memory to review memory use.

Look for a connection between resource use and the problem you notice—for example, whether the slowdown occurs while one particular app is active. Resource use by itself is not a diagnosis. If an app appears incompatible or unusually demanding, check its requirements and whether it supports your Mac and macOS version.
If an app is unresponsive or you have identified it as troublesome, Activity Monitor can help you locate and force quit that app. Apple explains the steps in its Activity Monitor guide. Avoid force quitting unfamiliar system processes as a routine speed tip.

Quit apps you are not using, and check compatibility
Apple recommends quitting apps that you are not using and apps that are incompatible with your Mac. This is most relevant when you have observed that open apps or a particular app are contributing to the issue; closing everything indiscriminately is not a diagnosis.

Use Disk Utility only when disk checks are relevant
If the symptoms or other checks suggest a disk problem, Apple recommends using Disk Utility to verify and try to fix disk issues. This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not routine maintenance that every MacBook needs. Follow Apple’s slow-Mac guidance for the appropriate next steps.
When to ask for further support
If the relevant checks do not explain a persistent slowdown, gather details before contacting Apple or a qualified service provider. Record the Mac model, macOS version, app involved (if any), when the issue occurs, and what you observed in Storage or Activity Monitor. That information can help make the support conversation more specific; it does not predetermine the cause or repair.
