If it does, enable HTTPS as its documentation directs. If you must manage certificates yourself, use an ACME client such as Certbot, choose a validation method that fits your server and DNS access, install the issued certificate in the service configuration, and test renewal before relying on it.
Decide who manages the certificate lifecycle
“SSL certificate” remains a common term, but HTTPS uses SSL/TLS to secure connections between browsers and web servers. Certificates are typically obtained and renewed through a hosting provider or an ACME client. Let’s Encrypt frames the first decision as whether the provider will get and manage certificates or whether you need to run an ACME client yourself: Let’s Encrypt’s Getting Started guide.

- Provider-managed: Check the provider’s HTTPS or certificate documentation and enable any required setting. Confirm whether issuance, renewal, and installation are all handled for your service.
- Self-managed: You need sufficient access to operate the server and its certificate configuration. Let’s Encrypt recommends Certbot for most people managing their own client; other ACME clients are also available. Follow the instructions for your operating system and web server rather than combining commands from different installation methods.
Let’s Encrypt recommends testing against its staging API before requesting a production certificate. Its production ACME directory is https://acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org/directory. A staging certificate is for testing; it does not replace the production certificate used by the live service.
Choose validation that fits your server and DNS access
The certificate authority must verify control of the domain before issuing a certificate. The right method depends on whether the service is publicly reachable over HTTP, whether its existing web server can remain available during validation, and whether you can safely use your DNS provider’s API. Certbot’s instructions describe the operational differences: Certbot User Guide.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
| Method | What it needs | Best fit and watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Webroot or web-server plugin | An existing website reachable publicly on HTTP, normally TCP port 80. | Use when the web server is running and can serve the ACME challenge. With webroot, ensure requests under /.well-known/acme-challenge reach the challenge files; rules that block or redirect /.well-known can prevent validation. |
| Standalone | Certbot temporarily runs a web server, and port 80 must be reachable from outside. | Use when Certbot can bind to the required port. Another service already occupying port 80 can prevent the temporary server from starting. |
| DNS validation | Access to the domain’s DNS provider, usually through a supported Certbot plugin and configured credentials. | Useful when inbound connections to the server are unavailable. Check that a plugin supports your DNS provider and protect its credentials; this method does not require an inbound connection to the server. |
Do not choose a method solely because it is available in an example command. A locked-down network may rule out HTTP validation, while DNS validation can add credential-management responsibilities. Confirm the method against your actual hosting and DNS setup.
Install the issued certificate in the service
Successful issuance is only one part of setup. The web server or service must be configured to present the certificate to visitors. Certbot’s nginx plugin can obtain a certificate and edit nginx configuration, or obtain a certificate without making those edits so you can configure it manually. For nginx, the documented examples are:

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
sudo certbot --nginxobtains and installs a certificate using the nginx plugin.sudo certbot certonly --nginxobtains a certificate but leaves configuration changes to you.
These examples apply to nginx with a compatible Certbot installation; they are not universal commands for every operating system, web server, or installation method. Use the current platform-specific instructions at Certbot’s guide and Certbot’s installation instructions. If configuring manually, make sure the service points to the newly issued certificate and the required certificate chain, then apply the configuration using the reload or restart procedure appropriate to that service.
Make renewal automatic and test the path
A certificate that works today can still fail later if renewal is not scheduled, validation stops working, or the renewed files are not loaded by the service. Certbot says its packages include a cron job or systemd timer to attempt renewal before expiration. Check which scheduler is present on your host and confirm that it is enabled; do not assume an installation has configured the same mechanism on every platform.

- Check the Certbot installation and platform guide to identify its renewal scheduler, such as cron or a systemd timer.
- Run
sudo certbot renew --dry-runto test the renewal path without replacing the production certificate. - Confirm that successful renewal also causes the running service to use the renewed certificate. Reload or deployment behavior depends on the web server and how it is managed.
- Review the service and scheduler logs if the dry run fails. Resolve validation, port-access, DNS-plugin, credential, or configuration problems before depending on unattended renewal.
Certbot documents the dry-run command and renewal behavior in its User Guide. A successful dry run checks the renewal process under the tested conditions; it does not prove that every future DNS, network, or service configuration change will be harmless.

After installation, open the service’s public HTTPS URL in a browser and confirm the page loads without a certificate warning. HTTPS normally uses TCP port 443, according to Certbot’s instructions and its help glossary. Make sure that port is reachable through the service’s firewall or network configuration.

A successful page load is a useful smoke test, not a full TLS configuration audit. If the browser reports an error, check that the certificate matches the hostname, the server presents the required certificate chain, the HTTPS listener is active, and the deployed configuration is the one you just changed. Certbot’s glossary describes HTTPS as HTTP secured with SSL/TLS for connections between browsers and web servers: Certbot glossary.
