Raspberry Pi Colour Detection: Choose a Sensor or Camera and Calibrate It

Use a TCS3200 or TCS34725 sensor for close-range colour readings, or a camera for larger scenes. Stable lighting and project-specific calibration matter for both.

You can detect colour with a Raspberry Pi using either a dedicated sensor or a camera. For a close, repeatable measurement, start with a TCS3200 or TCS34725 sensor; use a camera when you need to analyze a larger scene. In both cases, the Pi is interpreting reflected light or image pixels—not assigning a universal colour label—so control the lighting and calibrate your code with the objects you actually plan to detect.

Choose a colour-detection method

Approach Interface and workflow Best suited to What to plan for
TCS3200 sensor GPIO; the sensor’s output frequency varies with detected colour and light intensity. Python code can inspect readings or classify colours. Close-range sensing and simple demonstrations, including primary-colour detection. Check the module’s pin mapping and electrical compatibility. Keep distance and lighting consistent, and calibrate thresholds for your setup.
TCS34725 sensor I2C; Adafruit provides a CircuitPython library for compatible Raspberry Pi GNU/Linux systems. Read RGB and clear-channel data, as well as derived lux and colour-temperature values. Projects that benefit from a documented I2C driver and direct access to colour readings. Check I2C availability, wiring, and module voltage and logic compatibility. Choose gain and integration time for the lighting and sample conditions.
Raspberry Pi camera Capture an image, then use image-processing code to classify pixels or a selected region. Scenes or objects larger than a close-range sensor’s target area, or projects that need image context. Select a camera and the cable that fits the Pi’s connector. Account for lighting, white balance, and the extra image-processing work.

The TCS3200 has an 8×8 photodiode array beneath red, green, blue, or clear filters; reflected light affects its output. Raspberry Pi’s tutorial demonstrates connecting it to GPIO and using Python to display raw RGB values or identify primary colours. See Raspberry Pi’s colour-sensing tutorial.

The TCS34725 is another dedicated-sensor option, using I2C and an Adafruit CircuitPython library. For either sensor, treat a reading as a measurement made under particular conditions, not a guaranteed name for an object’s colour. The cited sources do not establish a controlled accuracy benchmark or universal thresholds.

pip3 install adafruit-circuitpython-tcs34725

After connecting a compatible TCS34725 module over I2C, the documented example initializes the default I2C bus, creates the sensor object, and reads colour values:

import board
import adafruit_tcs34725

i2c = board.I2C()
sensor = adafruit_tcs34725.TCS34725(i2c)

print(sensor.color)
print(sensor.color_rgb_bytes)
print(sensor.lux)
print(sensor.color_temperature)

Use sensor.color for the library’s colour value and sensor.color_rgb_bytes for RGB byte values in the 0–255 range. The API also exposes raw red, green, blue, and clear (RGBC) channels as four 16-bit values. Gain and integration time can be configured; their choice affects the readings, so tune them for your lighting and target rather than assuming one setting suits every project. Adafruit’s library introduction, API reference, and simple test example document the setup and available readings.

Calibrate readings for your objects and lighting

A sensor measures light reflected from the target. Ambient light, distance, surface finish, sensor settings, and the target itself can all affect the channels. A useful classification therefore depends on a repeatable setup and samples from the real project, not a set of thresholds assumed to work everywhere.

  1. Fix the geometry. Place the target at a consistent distance and angle. A simple enclosure or shield can reduce changing ambient light.
  2. Choose stable illumination. Keep the light source and its position consistent between calibration and use.
  3. Collect representative samples. Read the raw channels repeatedly for each target colour under the intended conditions. For the TCS34725, inspect RGBC as well as the convenience RGB values.
  4. Set and test project-specific rules. Choose thresholds from the observed samples, then test them on new samples of the actual targets. Revisit gain and integration time if readings are saturated, too low, or inconsistent.
  5. Allow an uncertain result. If a reading falls between calibrated groups, report it as unknown or ambiguous rather than forcing a colour label.

These steps are practical calibration guidance, not a published accuracy guarantee. Neither the Raspberry Pi tutorial nor the cited Adafruit documentation supplies universal numeric thresholds or a controlled performance comparison.

When a camera is the better fit

A camera can capture a larger area and provide scene context, but it changes the task: your code must acquire an image and decide which pixels or region to classify. That adds image-processing work and makes lighting and white balance important. It is a sensible choice when a close-range sensor cannot cover the area or distinguish the region you care about; for a single nearby target, a dedicated sensor usually offers a more direct path.

Check the breakout and wiring before powering up

Sensor boards can differ even when they use the same sensor chip. Confirm the specific module’s pin labels, supply-voltage requirements, and logic compatibility against the Pi before wiring it. The documented TCS34725 example uses I2C, while Raspberry Pi’s TCS3200 tutorial uses GPIO; do not assume their wiring or software is interchangeable.
