The bottom-right “Windows 11 Insider Preview” watermark is normal on pre-release Insider builds; it does not, by itself, mean Windows is unactivated. Microsoft provides no official setting to hide it while staying on the same installed build. To remove it safely, install applicable Insider updates or move to a stable, non-Insider build using a route supported by your current build and channel. Leaving Experimental (Future Platforms) requires a clean install.
Why the watermark appears
Microsoft says a visible lower-right desktop watermark is normal on pre-release Windows Insider builds. It identifies the Windows installation as a preview build rather than serving, on its own, as evidence of an activation problem. Microsoft’s Insider flighting documentation explains preview builds and their channels.

If you also see a separate activation error, treat that as a different issue: the Insider watermark alone does not establish that Windows is unactivated.
Check your installed build and channel
Confirm what is installed before changing settings. The selected Insider channel does not necessarily mean the installed build has already changed; a Microsoft support case describes a device switched from Experimental to Beta while its existing build remained installed. Beta is also a pre-release channel, so a watermark may remain there.

- Open Settings > System > About and read the edition, version, and OS build under Windows specifications.
- Alternatively, search for
winverand open the Windows version dialog to check the version and build. - Check your channel in Windows Insider settings, then compare it with your installed build and Microsoft’s current Insider guidance. A channel selection alone does not confirm that Windows has transitioned to a different build. Microsoft’s guide to checking flighting status describes these checks.
Choose a supported way to remove it
| Option | What to expect | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on Insider | Keep Windows Update enabled and install updates offered to your device. The watermark is expected on pre-release builds and may remain on the current build. Microsoft Insider guidance | No universal disappearance date or guaranteed update is specified. A Microsoft staff-moderated support response says there is no official setting to remove it while remaining on the same build. |
| Move to stable Windows | Leave preview builds for a stable, non-Insider release if your installed build supports a route to that target. Microsoft Insider guidance | The available route depends on the installed build and channel; some combinations require a clean installation. Back up important files before changing Windows versions. Microsoft’s staff-moderated response |
| Leave Experimental (Future Platforms) | Install Windows 11 cleanly to leave this channel. | Microsoft says Experimental (Future Platforms) does not align to a retail build, so leaving it requires a clean install. Back up important files first. Microsoft Insider guidance |
Why registry edits and removal utilities are not the fix
A Microsoft External Staff moderator advises against registry modifications and third-party watermark-removal tools. They do not change the underlying Windows build and may cause other problems. If your goal is to stop seeing a preview-build watermark, use an applicable update path or move to a supported stable build instead. Read the staff-moderated response.

Before leaving an Insider build
- Back up important files before a Windows version change or clean installation.
- Verify the installed build and channel rather than relying only on the channel currently selected in Settings.
- Do not assume a channel switch, a particular update, or a fixed waiting period will remove the watermark; Microsoft does not give a universal schedule.
- If an outdated flight certificate means an unsupported build no longer receives updates, Microsoft says a clean install may be required to resume receiving builds. See Microsoft’s flighting guidance.
