A dynamic microphone turns sound into an electrical signal through a moving diaphragm and coil in a magnetic field. Many are practical for loud sources and demanding live use, but there is no one-size-fits-all dynamic mic: the intended source, polar pattern, response, output and setup all matter.
How does a dynamic microphone work?
In a moving-coil dynamic microphone, sound pressure moves a diaphragm. A voice coil attached to that diaphragm moves within a magnetic field, generating an electrical signal that follows the sound. Shure describes the diaphragm, coil and magnet as a “miniature sound-driven electrical generator” in its guide to microphone techniques for recording.

This mechanism is why the term “dynamic” describes a type of transducer, not one particular sound or use. Different dynamic microphones can be designed for vocals, speech, instruments or other sources, with different pickup patterns and specifications.

Shure’s educational material describes dynamic microphones as rugged and able to handle loud sound pressure levels, which helps explain their popularity in live sound and on loud sources. It also notes that they can have limitations at very high and low frequencies. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees: check a model’s specifications and suitability for the source rather than assuming every dynamic mic tolerates any level or works equally well for every recording.

How do you choose a dynamic microphone?
Compare candidates against the job and setup, not just the category name. A frequency range printed in a specification is useful context, but it does not by itself establish how a microphone will sound or which model is preferable.
- Intended source: Look for a model designed for the work at hand, such as handheld vocals, speech or instruments.
- Polar pattern and off-axis response: The polar pattern describes how sensitivity changes with the direction sound arrives from. It affects both pickup of the intended source and rejection of surrounding sound. Room reflections and placement still matter. Shure explains these concepts in its microphone directionality and polar-pattern guide.
- Frequency response and shaping: Check the model’s published response and intended application; a range alone is not a sound-quality ranking.
- Output, connector and physical design: Confirm that the microphone works with your cable, mixer or interface, stand or clip, and the way you plan to use it. Consult the current model guide rather than extrapolating from another microphone’s specifications.
What do cardioid and supercardioid mean in practice?
These labels describe different directional pickup patterns. A cardioid microphone is most sensitive toward the front and less sensitive toward the rear; a supercardioid pattern is narrower toward the sides but has some rear pickup. Pattern labels help with placement, but they do not eliminate room sound or guarantee rejection of every unwanted source.

How should you position and handle a dynamic vocal mic?
For the SM58 specifically, Shure’s guide recommends aiming the microphone toward the intended singer, talker or instrument and away from unwanted sources. Place it as close as practical; close use boosts bass through the proximity effect. Outdoors, use a windscreen. Avoid excessive handling, and do not cover any part of the grille.
When using multiple microphones, the SM58 guide recommends keeping the distance between microphones at least three times the distance from each microphone to its source. Treat this as Shure’s rule of thumb for the guide’s context, not a substitute for listening and checking phase in your setup. The full SM58 user guide includes the manufacturer’s placement guidance.

What should you check before buying accessories?
Accessories and replacement parts are model-specific. Shure’s PGA58 guide, for example, lists XLR cables C25J/C25F, clip A25D, thread adapter 31A1856, replacement grille RPMP58G and cartridge RPM150. Those examples do not establish compatibility with other microphones. Check the exact model, connector and accessory designation in its guide before ordering; see the PGA58 guide for that model’s examples.
