Windows 11 Home is enough for most personal PCs. Choose Pro when you need a specific capability such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, hosting Remote Desktop connections, joining a work or school domain or Microsoft Entra ID, or using Client Hyper-V. Pro is not established as a general speed or performance upgrade. If you already have Home, you can upgrade through Microsoft Store or enter a valid Pro product key in Settings.
Windows 11 Home vs Pro: what changes?
Microsoft describes Pro as adding advanced security and business networking capabilities. The practical question is whether you will use one of those capabilities—not whether Pro is automatically better for every PC. Microsoft’s Windows 11 edition comparison and its Home-to-Pro upgrade guidance identify the main differences.

| Capability | When it matters | Home vs Pro |
|---|---|---|
| BitLocker Drive Encryption | You need to encrypt the PC’s drive using BitLocker. | Microsoft identifies BitLocker Drive Encryption as a Pro capability. |
| Remote Desktop | You need this PC to host incoming Remote Desktop connections. | Microsoft identifies Remote Desktop as a Pro feature. |
| Domain or Microsoft Entra ID joining | Your employer or school requires the PC to join its managed environment. | Microsoft lists domain and Microsoft Entra ID joining among Pro’s business networking capabilities. |
| Client Hyper-V | You want to run virtual machines using Client Hyper-V. | Microsoft lists Client Hyper-V as a Pro feature; the processor must support SLAT. |
| BitLocker To Go | You need to encrypt removable storage such as a USB flash drive. | Microsoft lists BitLocker To Go for Pro and above; it requires a USB flash drive. |
Feature availability can depend on hardware or other device prerequisites. Check the requirements for the particular capability you plan to use; installing Pro alone does not guarantee every feature will work on every PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

Who should choose Windows 11 Pro?
Choose Pro for a specific work or security requirement
- You need BitLocker Drive Encryption. Choose Pro if the BitLocker capability is required for your device or organization.
- You need to connect into your PC with Remote Desktop. Microsoft identifies Remote Desktop as a Pro feature; this is relevant when the PC must host incoming connections.
- Your organization requires domain or Microsoft Entra ID joining. Pro supports the listed business networking capabilities. Follow your IT administrator’s edition and device requirements.
- You need Client Hyper-V. It is a Pro feature, and the processor must support SLAT.
Home is the sensible default for routine personal use
If your day-to-day use does not require those Pro capabilities, Home is generally the practical choice. Microsoft’s comparison documents the added Pro features; it does not establish that ordinary personal use needs Pro.

How to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro
Microsoft’s consumer instructions apply to an activated Windows 11 Home installation. Check the edition and activation status first, then use one of the supported purchase or product-key routes.
- Open Settings > System > Activation and confirm that Windows is activated and the installed edition is Home.
- If you already have a valid Windows 11 Pro product key, select the option to change the product key in Activation settings and enter it.
- If you do not have a Pro key, use the Microsoft Store option on the Activation page to purchase the upgrade. Microsoft says you will be prompted to install Pro and restart after purchase.
Microsoft Learn also documents Home-to-Pro as a supported edition-upgrade direction through manual product-key entry and Microsoft Store purchase in its Windows edition upgrade guidance. For an ordinary consumer purchase, follow Microsoft Support’s instructions for the Store experience.

What to check before paying
- Identify the feature you need. If you cannot name a Pro capability that solves a real requirement, staying on Home is likely sufficient.
- Check compatibility. Client Hyper-V needs a processor with SLAT, and other capabilities may have their own device requirements.
- Check the current regional price. Microsoft’s cited upgrade instructions establish the purchase route, not a universal price; price and availability may vary by region and change over time.
- Separate setup requirements from edition differences. Microsoft says Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete first-use setup. That is a setup condition, not a reason by itself to choose Pro. See Microsoft’s Windows installation and product-key guidance.
