How to Research China Construction Bank Stock Before Investing

Start by identifying which China Construction Bank (CCB) share you mean: its Shanghai A-share (601939) or Hong Kong H-share (00939). They are separate listed securities, so do not assume their prices, currencies, trading access or valuations are interchangeable. Then use CCB’s latest official reports to assess the bank’s earnings, loan quality, capital and risks before comparing either share’s market price with its fundamentals.

Identify the CCB share you are researching

CCB has two ordinary-share listings: A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 601939, and H-shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 00939. The bank says its H-shares listed on 27 October 2005 and its A-shares on 25 September 2007. These distinctions identify which security you are evaluating; they do not establish which one is a better investment. See CCB’s investor relations page for official listing information.

Before looking up a quote, record the ticker, exchange and quote date. If you can trade both listings, separately confirm each security’s trading and settlement currency, availability through your broker, custody arrangements, transaction charges and any tax treatment that applies to your jurisdiction. CCB’s listing information does not settle those investor-specific details.

Use the latest official reports, not a stale summary

As of 7 October 2026, CCB’s investor relations site lists its 2025 H-share annual report, dated 27 April 2026; its 2025 A-share annual report, dated 27 March 2026; its 2026 first-quarter report, dated 29 April 2026; and its 2026 half-year report, dated 28 August 2026. It also lists 2026 interim results presentation and webcast materials. Start with the relevant annual and interim filings for financial statements, accounting notes, risk disclosures, capital and ownership information. Use presentations to understand management’s framing, then check the underlying figures and definitions in the reports. The CCB investor relations page is the starting point for these materials.

CCB’s financial reporting information page directs investors to Financial Highlights and annual or interim reports for detailed financial information. For a trend rather than a single snapshot, compare at least three to five years of annual filings with the latest interim report. Check that reporting periods, accounting bases and metric definitions are comparable before treating a change as a trend.

Assess CCB as a bank

A bank’s reported profit alone does not tell you how resilient its earnings are. Extract the measures below from the filings and track their direction over time; the figures need to come from the report itself, not an undated quote page or an unverified summary.

Earnings and lending economics

  • Net interest income and net interest margin: Track both, and read management’s explanation of changes in lending and deposit rates. Margin pressure can matter even when the loan book grows.
  • Loans and deposits: Compare growth rates, funding structure and the composition of lending. Look for customer, industry or other concentrations disclosed in the notes rather than relying only on total balances.
  • Fee and other non-interest income: Check whether revenue sources are changing alongside interest income, and whether operating costs are rising faster or slower than income.
  • Return on equity and return on assets: Read these alongside capital levels, credit costs and the earnings trend; a headline return figure does not explain what produced it.

Loan quality and loss absorption

  • Track non-performing, overdue and special-mention loans, and read the filing’s definitions. These categories are not necessarily interchangeable.
  • Compare impairment charges, allowance coverage and write-offs over time. Examine the assumptions and loan categories behind the reported measures.
  • Read disclosures on property and real-estate exposure, related-party exposures, contingent liabilities and other material concentrations. Their presence in a checklist is a diligence prompt, not a claim that a particular risk is currently a weakness.

Capital, liquidity and distributions

  • Record capital adequacy and core tier-one capital ratios, plus the liquidity and funding information the report provides. Compare them across reporting periods and consider the definitions and regulatory context in the filing.
  • Review cash dividends, payout ratio, record and ex-dividend dates, and the currency and election details. A past distribution does not establish that the same amount or yield will recur.
  • Check regulatory, geopolitical and other risk disclosures, including any changes from the prior filing.

Check ownership and governance disclosures

CCB’s 2026 half-year report listing identifies Huijin as holding 54.51% and the Ministry of Finance as holding 11,589,403,973 A-shares, described as subject to a five-year lock-up from 24 June 2025. The report listing also gives 292,731 registered ordinary shareholders at 30 June 2026: 257,897 A-share holders and 34,834 H-share holders. These are figures attributed to CCB’s 2026 half-year report; consult the filing for the definitions and context behind the figures.

CCB’s financial reporting information page names KPMG as its external auditor and says the board has five specialized committees, including an Audit Committee. Those are company-stated facts. They do not, on their own, establish audit quality, the effectiveness of internal controls or the quality of governance in practice. Read the relevant report disclosures and audit opinion rather than treating the names or number of committees as a governance verdict.

Compare the A-share and H-share using same-date evidence

If both listings are accessible to you, compare observations from the same date. A price from one day and a financial denominator or exchange rate from another can produce a misleading comparison. Use consistent share-count, earnings and book-value definitions, and state the source and date for market prices and any currency conversion.

Comparison What to establish What CCB’s cited materials establish
Venue and ticker Confirm the exchange and exact security before placing an order. Shanghai A-share 601939 and Hong Kong H-share 00939; listing dates are 25 September 2007 and 27 October 2005, respectively. CCB investor relations
Trading currency and investor access Check the quote and settlement currencies, broker availability, custody terms, fees and jurisdiction-specific tax treatment. Not stated in the cited listing information; confirm with the relevant exchange, broker and tax authority.
Liquidity and free float Use current exchange or market data and note the observation date; shareholder count is not a substitute for trading volume or free float. Current liquidity and free-float comparisons are not stated in the cited listing information.
Valuation Compare price-to-book and, where meaningful, an earnings-based measure using same-date prices and consistent financial definitions. Current A-share and H-share prices and valuation multiples are not stated in the cited materials.
Dividends and currency exposure Check the declared amount, payment timing, currency conversion and any withholding treatment relevant to you. These investor- and payment-specific comparisons are not established by the cited listing information; consult the relevant filing and your broker.

Because the cited materials do not supply current prices, exchange rates or valuation multiples, they cannot show which listing is cheaper now. Calculate a comparison from dated market data and the same financial reporting basis instead of inferring value from the ticker or venue.

Keep company scale separate from investment value

CCB reported 785 million personal customers, 12.73 million corporate customers and 14,614 outlets at year-end 2025. It also reported an approximately US$265.545 billion market capitalization at year-end 2025. These are company-reported figures, not independent market statistics; the capitalization figure is a dated snapshot, not a current quote. Scale can describe the size of the business, but none of these measures establishes attractive valuation, strong future returns or low risk. See CCB’s investor relations materials for the company’s reporting.

A sound research conclusion should therefore connect the specific share’s current, dated market price to the latest comparable filing data, while accounting for the bank-specific risks and the investor’s own access and currency circumstances.
